Job Summary:

NATURE OF JOB:
The Media Relations Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for media outlets, coordinating media opportunities and other public-facing features elevating the brand of Langston University. Reporting to the Director of Public Relations, this position performs creative and highly skilled work involving writing, research, and editing of materials for internal and external audiences. The Media Relations Specialist works closely with the Director of Public Relations to meet all deadlines, establishing and maintaining schedules for the production of publications and media-related content.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Writes articles and stories conforming to Associate Press style and publishing requirements; edits materials for publication in a productive, complete, accurate, and timely manner.

Develops, writes, and edits material for internal and external distribution such as press releases, newsletters, annual reports, and other publications as directed to meet the needs of stakeholders.

Leads the preparation of press and editorial kits for submission to media; maintains experts lists and monitors editorial calendars for select publications, assists in planning and execution of news conferences including all aspects of the event.

Assists in social media content development and maintenance.

Assists in website content development and maintenance.

Maintains local and statewide newspaper clippings/articles related to Langston University; man ages online monitoring tools related to social media mentions.

Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to established standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology; organizes information within communications projects to maximize clarity for the target audience.

Reviews national, statewide, and local news outlets daily.

Assists in speech preparation for various events and on various topics.

Serve as photographer for public relations projects and events as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

COMPETENCY/POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, analytical reasoning, and organizational skills. Must be able to work independently and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with all levels of professional, technical, and administrative staff to integrate resources in a timely and organized manner.
EXPERIENCE:

Required: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Strategic Communications, Mass Communications.
