Job Summary:
The General Manager is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the Kodiak Brown Bear Center and Lodge to ensure its continuous and efficient operation and achievement of the Company’s goals for quality, safety, environmental compliance, and profitability. Provide operational, financial, and management leadership for all Kodiak Brown Bear Center Island operations and programs located on Camp Island; provide periodic reports to the Director of Operations in all areas.

Property Management:
Provide operational, financial, and management leadership for all Kodiak Brown Bear Center Island operations and programs located on Camp Island; provide periodic reports to the Director of Operations in all areas. Oversee day-to-day lodge operations, including housekeeping, maintenance, and guest services.
  • Maintain the property’s standards, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Coordinate with various staff both on the Island and in Kodiak to ensure efficient functioning.
  • Ensure the safety, quality, and continuity of operations. Maintain safety protocol on the island.
  • Maintain/Monitor the septic system, water filtration system, and electrical/fuel systems.
  • Monitor equipment for maintenance and safety. Guest Relations:
  • Greet and welcome guests, provide cabin assignments and accommodate special requests. Greet and welcome guests, provide cabin assignments and accommodate special requests.
  • Address inquiries, resolve complaints, and ensure guest satisfaction throughout their stay.
  • Maintain a daily schedule with staff and clients.
  • Support logistics for travel. Act as the onsite point of contact for guests experiencing travel delays.
  • Develop the proper documentation and make applications for various permits, agreements, and contracts.
Staff Management:
  • Supervise lodge staff, including Lead Guide, Assistant Guide, Chef, and Hospitality Apprentice.
  • Delegate tasks, create schedules, and monitor performance.
  • Submit timecards
  • Develop and update KWA operational policies and procedures for KWA personnel.
  • As needed, assume other KWA personnel duties, ensuring continuity in operations and quality of experience for clients at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center.
Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
  • 6 years' experience at a management level is preferred, a combination of education and experience in Management within the tourism/travel/hospitality industry may be considered.
  • Strong personal commitment to safety and the ability to create employee ownership of safety and quality.
  • Mature leadership, seasoned judgment, high integrity, and the ability to learn quickly. Ability to quickly gain credibility and to understand and influence the organization. Confident with strong interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and manage productive relationships at all levels, establish trust, and counsel staff in a thoughtful, sensitive, and timely manner.
  • Capable of overseeing the operational aspects of the lodge, including maintenance schedules, equipment inventory, and safety protocols
  • Skilled in learning new equipment operation procedures quickly and efficiently. Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing various types of equipment.
  • Experienced in coordinating with vendors and suppliers for equipment repairs and replacements
  • Strong interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to set and adjust multiple priorities. Ability to organize time and identify resources for individual and group projects. Results-oriented using project management skills to the highest degree.
  • Willing to learn about the lands, waters, and rivers of the Karluk Drainage Basin.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Ability to work more than a 40-hour week.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent lifting of 40-60 pounds.
  • Must be able to withstand repetitive motion up to 10 hours a day with lunch and breaks.

Office Location and Travel:
  • This position is located on Kodiak Island, Alaska. The lodge is located on the banks of Karluk Lake on the island's western side and accessible only by chartered float plane.
Working Environment & Conditions:
  • This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor weather will vary and could include, but is not limited to, hot dry weather, low to high winds, or cold, rainy, and damp. Much of the terrain is uneven and requires the incumbent to have good balance and physically travel on uneven terrain for extended periods of time. There is required frequent travel via water vessels on open waters. Excellent hearing and vision is required. Noise levels will vary from low to high.
