Qualifications
Education:
High School diploma preferred
Certification:
Must meet the Michigan School Bus Driver Certification and Physical Examination requirements including the minimum hours of instruction and satisfactorily passing knowledge examination. Valid Michigan driver's license, or has completed the necessary bus driver's courses to secure CDL with "S" and "P" endorsement.Must pass drug and alcohol screenings.
Training and Experience:
Must successfully complete a Bus Driver Training Program including classroom instruction, behind the wheel instruction and the written and driving skills tests. WPS will provide paid training!
Responsibilities:
1.Obey all traffic laws.
2.Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses, instructing passengers/riders regarding the safety regulations with safety of passengers/riders as first priority.
3.Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
4.Report undisciplined students to the proper authority following District's policies.
5.Keep assigned bus clean.
6.Use established routes and designated stops.
7.Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle as required.
8.Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
9.Discharge students only at authorized stops.
10.Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
11.Transport only authorized students.
12.Report all accidents and complete required reports legibly and by required timelines.
13.Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
14.Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required by policies and regulations.
15.Perform all other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.
Physical Demand:
1. Must have the ability to open and close a bus hood and lift the hood up to perform pre-trip requirements of the engine.
2. Must be able to open and close the entrance and emergency doors and perform repetitive motions in the course of driving a school bus.
3. Must be able to bend, push and pull to load and unload a wheelchair, with or without a passenger/rider, onto a lift platform, by exerting a maximum of 50 pounds of push/pull pressure.
4. Must be able to bend, support and otherwise physically carry a student/passenger/rider into and out of a school bus, especially in the case of an emergency.
5. Must be able to carry and lift into and from the school bus, assorted personal articles and adaptive equipment of various weights and sizes up to 40 pounds.
6. Must be able to bend, twist and stretch for the cleaning and securing of equipment in the interior of the school bus.
7. Must be able to bend, stretch, pull or drag all students/passengers/riders, equipment (i.e. car seats, wheelchairs, fire extinguisher) or other types of articles that would be of varying sizes and weight out of the emergency exits on demand.
Demonstrated Technical Skills:
Ability to maneuver large buses efficiently and safely. Must meet local, county and state standards for driving skills test and local and state standards for driving record check.
Human Relations Skills:
Ability to relate to students, staff, and community members.
Other Qualifications:
Must pass criminal history records search at the cost of the applicant
Note: Pursuant to PA 131, the selected candidate must receive clearance, from the Michigan State Police Department, prior to the offer of employment. The candidate is responsible for the background check fee.
