SUMMARY:

Armed Keeneland Security Officers deploy during three (3) eight (8) hour shifts the entire year, including Weekends & Holidays. Shift hours are subject to change/extend during Race Meetings and Horse Sales. Keeneland Security Officers are considered Essential Employees, and shall expect schedules to change as deemed necessary in support of any and all situations. Keeneland Security Officers shall receive adequate resources, proper tools and training (uniforms & equipment provided), and knowledge-based skills needed to successfully perform job tasks and take calculated risks. Keeneland Security Officers patrol and protect Keeneland grounds and ensure safety of visitors, patrons and employees.

This position is full-time, and likely assigned to:

  • 2nd shift (4:00 P.M. - 12:00 A.M.) five (5) days per week (payroll week is Wednesday Tuesday); or
  • 3rd shift (12:00 A.M - 8:00 A.M.) five (5) days per week (payroll week is Wednesday Tuesday);
    • Please indicate your preference on the application.
  • Shift assignments are permanent until vacancies exist on opposite shifts. Transfers to other shifts is granted based upon seniority as a Full Time Keeneland Security Officer
  • Shift schedules are subject to change with minimal notice.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Security Officers wear a Keeneland issued security uniform, and therefore must be free of facial hair aside from an appropriately groomed mustache
  • Security Officers shall not have visible tattoos/body art; if present, security officers shall be willing to cover same, i.e., long sleeves if tattoo is below elbows, etc. Ear piercings, within reason, and upon prior approval, are acceptable. Hair styles must be neat, groomed , and must not present a safety hazard
  • Applicant must submit a resume upon applying. Submissions without an enclosed resume may not be considered.
  • Applicant must have applicable experience in the security field, i.e., prior security experience (armed security a plus), military, law enforcement, corrections. Applicants without applicable experience (12-24 months) may not be considered.
  • Applicant must be of sound mind and moral character
  • Must possess a clean driving record and be free of felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude, domestic or work place violence; or anything that would preclude him/her from possessing/carrying a firearm.
  • Applicant must successfully complete a structured two (2) phase interview process gauged to assess general knowledge and ability to perform security officer tasks to include, but not limited to, judgement and decision-making abilities.
    • 1st phase interview is with the Director, and Assistant Director, of Security
    • Candidates chosen to advance to the 2nd interview will interview with the Director, and Assistant Director, of Security joined by the Assistant Director of Human Resources or Vice President of Equine Safety
  • Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, he/she will undergo, and must successfully complete, a thorough background investigation, which consists of character and workplace references being contacted. The applicant must successfully pass a medical screening, to include a drug screening, as Keeneland is a Drug Free Workplace.
  • Upon employment as a Keeneland Security Officer, he/she is required to satisfactorily complete 40 hours of indoctrination training including, but not limited to, Keeneland policies, firearm proficiency, use of force, legal parameters and guidelines, conflict de-escalation, evacuation procedures, and dealing with critical incidents, etc. He/she is also required to satisfactorily complete 32 hours of annual in-service/refresher training.
  • Keeneland Security Officers are issued firearms and required to demonstrate proficiency upon hire (during indoctrination training) as well as multiple times annually. Uniforms and equipment provided upon hire.
  • Applicant must be willing to work any shift during a 24-hour period with minimal advanced notice. During April and October Race Meetings, he/she is required to work extended hours, (overtime is mandatory during April and October Race Meetings).
  • Possess good communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Must apply sound judgement while using discretion in dealings with patrons and employees
  • Must demonstrate good customer relation and interaction skills as well as the ability to think on his/her feet
  • Must be capable of operating in a multi-task environment as well as have the ability to contribute to a team atmosphere.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

  • Patrol and inspect buildings and grounds to ensure all is secure.
  • Ensure, and maintain, safety of visitors, patrons and employees.
  • Regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic to maintain orderly flow while reducing congestion.
  • Records data and thoroughly document traffic collisions, thefts, acts of vandalism, assaults, suspicious activities, as well as any applicable incident or situation.
  • Complete daily incident/accident reports, vehicle pre-inspection reports, and patrol and operational logs.
  • Perform vehicle lockout procedures and escort patrons and employee when requested.
  • Coordinate with police and fire agencies during emergencies and assists as needed.
  • Perform and/or assist with CPR and First Aid as needed.
  • Assist Keeneland visitors with information and direction as needed.
  • Perform necessary and assigned duties throughout grounds.
  • Provides currency escorts to various locations throughout Grandstand and property.
  • Control entry/exit point of Keeneland Dormitory as well as ensuring all dormitory residents adhere to rules and regulations.
  • Assist with ejections of applicable parties from Keeneland Dormitory, and grounds, in accordance with Keeneland polices and Kentucky Racing Commission guidelines.
  • Assists Kentucky Horse Racing Commission personnel as requested.
  • Assist stewards during Race Meetings as requested.
  • Assist with locating lost visitors and patrons.
  • Provide security in barns and stables as needed.
  • Monitor and control internal burglary alarm and surveillance camera systems.
  • Operates in Security Operations Center - tasks include, but not limited to, answering telephones, dispatching in-coming calls for service, report taking, assigning dormitory rooms, ensuring Keeneland Lodge rules and regulations are acknowledged and adhered to, etc.

*Other duties shall be assigned as needed and as circumstances dictate

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assigned to oversee activities of, and provide direction to, part-time and seasonal security officers

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma. Keeneland management shall acknowledge equivalent experience and education, or combination thereof
  • Applicant must possess applicable experience in the security field, i.e., prior security experience (armed security a plus), military, law enforcement, corrections. Applicants without 12-24 months of applicable experience may not be considered.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operation and patrol procedures, and other relevant manuals. Ability to accurately prepare and complete incident reports. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees within organization.

*Fluency in Spanish language strongly preferred

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding in order to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving patrons and employees, and exercise de-escalation methods during conflict.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess Kentucky Drivers License and be able to attain a Kentucky Horse Racing License in which Keeneland will provide upon hire.
