Technical Project Manager
Job Summary
The Project Manager manages each phase of one or more development projects at a time to ensure that commitments are met in a manner that is timely, within budget, within COG, and delivers the features requested by the Product Manager through diligent planning, execution, and project management best practices following the Juniper Systems Product Development Processes. Experience managing both hardware and software product development projects is preferred.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works closely with a Product Engineer and Product Manager to manage project expectations. The Project Manager is expected to learn and understand the product being developed and become familiar with the development challenges of the product.
  • Working with the Product Engineer, ensures that project roles and responsibilities are well-defined and that project members understand what is expected of them and what they should expect from one another.
  • Leads the project planning activities, including oversight of the Product Development Process. The Project Manager directs the creation, approval, and ongoing maintenance of the project plan, which should be aggressive but achievable.
  • Working with the Product Engineer leads the project tracking, problem management activities and risk management. Proactively tracks project members’ progress against their project commitments to discover and mitigate any potential problems before they occur.
  • Communicates project status to project stakeholders. Project status includes schedule, budget, features/functionality, COG (if applicable) and risk status.
  • Working with the Product Engineer helps manage COG according to the guidelines and target established by the Product Manager. Leads the project team to identify cost saving opportunities, while still maintaining features and quality.
  • Manages to the project’s top three priorities. The Project Manager understands that the top reason that projects run into trouble is that a project’s most important problems are not managed effectively, nor with the sense of urgency they require.
  • Encourages and supports escalations. The Project Manager and Product Engineer establish a project culture where escalations to resolve “stagnant” problems are viewed as good business, not as personal issues.
  • Ensures that scope creep is carefully managed. No features/functions are added/modified/deleted without being assessed through the change control process.
  • Identifies improvements to the project management processes and practices based on learned knowledge and experience. The Project Manager studies the lessons learned from previous projects and applies the most important lessons to the next project.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in the discipline of the job and 0 years’ experience OR 4 years of directly relevant job experience if the candidate has no schooling OR a combination of schooling and experience that is equivalent to a Bachelor of Science graduate with 0 years’ experience.
  • Basic computer skills including knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook and MS Project.
  • Must be familiar with project management tools and practices (Project Management Institute standard practices) such as Gantt charts, work breakdown structures, etc.
  • High ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Have strong organization and prioritization skills.
  • Results oriented.
  • Technical skills in mechanical, electrical and/or software engineering
  • A PMP certification is preferred.
  • Experience with project management focused on product development.
Responsibility, Accountability, and Supervisory Responsibilities
Accountable for executing projects according to approved project plans. Receives direction from the Program Manager. This individual has some supervisory responsibility (typically less than 4 employees) OR is responsible for significant activities involving more than one department.
This position works closely with one or more Product Engineers and one or more Product Managers to direct project success related to one or more products. It is expected that this individual can communicate on a technical level with all disciplines working on a project to help understand project progress and is willing to help were needed during the development phases.
Judgment, Creativity
The job requires a high level of sound judgment. The boundaries within which decisions are made are not well-defined (i.e. processes or policies do not address many situations / decision). This job requires judgment / decision-making of this magnitude on a regular basis. The job requires routine creativity and resourcefulness and/or the creation of new ideas. The creative effort of this job is generally confined within well-developed guidelines.
Communication, Negotiation, and Networking Skills
The job requires written and verbal communication skills on the level of a college graduate (including spelling). Requires the ability to network effectively within and outside the company. Requires communication skills which enable the writing of general communication documents for internal and external purposes. Requires some skill in negotiating with other personnel and with other firms. The job requires that the individual communicates frequently with one or more Product Engineers and Product Managers to assure each is aware of project progress and that all parties are involved in weekly project updates.
Working Hours and Conditions:
Normal 40 - 50 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Some occasional overtime may be needed. Generally requires less than 15 days of travel annually, however there could be more if working with a vendor in a foreign country i.e., travel may be required to a foreign vendor a couple of times a year. May require before or after hours calls with vendors located in time zones outside the United States.
