Posting Description

The role is part of the Credit Risk Custom Center of Excellence within Asset and Wealth Management and is responsible for managing a portion of the US Underwriting team. This group assesses, permissions and governs credit and counterparty risks on an industry, client, geographic and transaction basis. The Credit Risk function identifies, approves, measures, limits, manages and monitors credit risk across our businesses. Credit exposure arises through underwriting, lending and trading activities with and for clients and counterparties, as well as from a range of operating services such as cash management and clearing activities. Our business partners include Front Office Banking and Lending Solutions, Middle Office, Legal, Compliance and Controls. 

The leadership role will report to the US Underwriting Manager and will be responsible for all underwriting and approval activities for a team of 30-40 managers and underwriters. The position is in the Asset and Management risk group, with a heavy emphasis on underwriting analysis, credit risk and team management. The candidate should possess strong leadership skills and have tenured credit risk experience. Must have a strong commitment to customer service and teamwork to contribute to high-performing teams through development of self and others.

Job responsibilities

  • Lead effective pipeline and capacity management for the team
  • Monitor and govern consistent, efficient and accurate underwriting
  • Manage pipeline across new client requests, modifications and annual reviews. Create a culture of transparency for all activities being performed in the teams.
  • Partner with first line of defense to keep portfolio management metrics within defined thresholds including but not limited to annual reviews, over limits, overdrafts, and covenant breaches
  • Analyze capacity and proactivity manage the teams to match business prioritization and growth. Monitor due diligence review findings to manage error rates to under threshold requirements
  • Promote a strong control environment by adhering to risk and control expectations. Support regulatory exam management
  • Identify and develop processes to strengthen areas of weakness in the Custom product operating model
  • Build a high performing team by setting clear direction, driving performance, empowering the team, coaching for impact, fostering feedback and guiding careers
  • Lead the talent agenda by hiring a diverse team of underwriters and managers and support Center culture by creating an inclusive environment

Required qualifications, capabilities and skills

  • Bachelor's degree required; Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Management or related degree preferred.
  • 10 years of credit risk experience and strong working knowledge of the industry 
  • Ability to work with people at all levels in the organization and contribute to the strategic direction of the firm and the team
  • Strong risk and control track record. Self-starter with experience leading a business end-to-end
  • High-energy and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and ability to build and manage a diverse, high performing team
  • Strong negotiating skills with the ability to lead at senior levels across the organization. Strategic thinker with the ability to deliver innovative solutions and opportunities for clients
  • Ability to collaborate with partners and stakeholders across the organization to lead forward business priorities
  • Ability to quickly assess potential issues, gaps and process improvements by monitoring productivity against benchmarks
  • Solid credit, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills
