Summary
The Director of Residence Life provides visionary leadership and administrative oversight to the Office of Residence Life by providing guidance, strategic direction and support to the overall residential student experience at John Carroll University. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director supervises and collaborates to lead residential education and housing operations with a focus on student learning, belonging, development, success, and well-being.
As the university advances its Inspired Futures vision, the Director will lead the continued implementation of the expanded 4-year residential experience and requirement while overseeing the continued growth of university-sponsored housing options, which currently include 7 traditional residence halls, multiple off-campus apartment buildings, houses, and duplexes. The Director will also be assuming leadership of the Office of Residence Life at a time when they will have the ability to lead the development of a newly formed team and foster a culture of learning, imagination, and accountability for the professional and student (graduate and undergraduate) staffs. The Director of Residence Life is expected to form strong, collaborative relationships within the department, the Division of Student Experience and Campus Belonging, and across campus, including with faculty, to foster innovation and enhancements for the residential student experience.
The residential experience is a key component of the transformational nature of the John Carroll University student experience. The Director of Residence Life will be expected to vision, lead, and share the story of the residential experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide vision and leadership for the Office of Residence Life including strategic planning and the management of fiscal and human resources.
  • Develop, maintain and promote the departmental mission statement, strategic plans, policies and procedures within the guidelines and practices of the University and Division of Student Experience and Campus Belonging.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for a diverse staff including 2 Associate Directors (both of whom are direct reports), 1 Assistant Director, 3 Area Coordinators, a Coordinator of the Residential Neighborhood Experience, and over 50 undergraduate student leaders.
  • Assess the needs, learning outcomes and satisfaction of students regarding their residential experience.
  • Manage office operations including developing and monitoring budgets; marketing and evaluating activities; developing and maintaining database systems; and ensuring excellent customer service with all constituents.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with campus partners, to develop and implement a residential experience that nurtures a sense of belonging and prioritizes the development of inclusive living and learning spaces.
  • Maintain safe, secure, and attractive learning environments in all residential facilities through regular communication and planning with Facilities, Housekeeping, and Auxiliary Services
  • In collaboration with JCU Police Department and the manager of risk and regulatory affairs, establish safety and security policies and procedures including emergency and disaster protocols.
  • Provide expertise and direction in the development and implementation of master planning involving renovation and construction of residential facilities.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of websites, on-line and print communications and technology.
  • Supervise management the summer conference program including: hiring, training, and supervision of conference staff, sales, client communications, scheduling logistics, and billing.
Provide leadership for overall residential student support and design and delivery the educational, community-building, and leadership development experiences across all residence halls and off-campus units managed by the Office of Residence Life.
  • Supervise the development of a comprehensive four-year residential experience focused on student success and belonging informed by current research, trends, and practices about the needs and developmental nature of the college student experience
  • Work with faculty and other campus partners to develop, implement, and expand of living learning communities, including current LLCs focused on STEM, mission-based programs, and inclusivity and social justice, with a potential future-focus on the development of a residential curriculum
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of campus ministry to incorporate the resident ministry staff into staff development and student support programs as well as spiritual development and community building activities within the residence halls.
  • Manage response to students of concern and response to student emergencies and crises as a member of the university’s CARE Team and a direct report to the Dean of Students. Serve as a secondary support in the Residence Life on-call duty rotation.
  • Develop and uphold community standards and serve as a university conduct officer with a focus on restorative justice, including opportunities to serve as a University Conduct Board officer and a Title IX investigator.
Serve as a University thought leader and engage as a member of the JCU community
  • Participate in divisional and university committees, task forces, and programs as asked by the Dean of Students and/or other university leadership.
  • Be a visible member of the John Carroll University community supporting student events and programs and university functions connected to the student experience and strategic initiatives.
  • Actively participate in professional associations and networking opportunities which inform and improve the quality of the operations of residence life.
  • When operations or strategic priorities necessitate, perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or other university leadership.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in residence life and/or higher education with significant experience supervising staff and directing residential student experience and housing operations.
  • Knowledge of residential learning environments and living-learning communities promising practices, including understanding of residential curriculum.
  • Experience empowering students and fostering student engagement.
  • Strong oral and written communication, strategic planning, analytical, assessment, facilities management, and staff development skills.
  • Proficiency in data base and software systems that support the operations of residence life.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and creating an inclusive campus environment.
  • Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll’s Jesuit Catholic mission and tradition and incorporating the mission into the residential experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with off-campus student university-sponsored student housing, including town/gown relationships.
  • Experience with restorative justice and Title IX.
Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
This position works in-person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours including some nights and weekends based on department operations.

Ability to demonstrate the physical movements of the sport. Office functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary range will be $60,000 – $75,000, commensurate with qualifications. This position offers a generous Total Rewards package that includes health and dental insurance options, paid vacation, personal, sick, and mission time, holidays, 403 (b) retirement plan, life insurance, and tuition remission benefits for you, your spouse, and children.
