Summary
The Coordinator of Residential Student Neighborhood Experience is a full-time, 12-month, live-on professional staff member in the Office of Residence Life. The Coordinator of Residential Student Neighborhood Experience reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life for Residential Education and shares in the responsibility for all facets of the Residence Life program. This position is new to the Office of Residence Life due to the expansion of university-sponsored housing options and the implementation of a third-and fourth-year residency requirement.
The Coordinator of Residential Student Neighborhood Experience is responsible for leading the expanded university-sponsored housing options in apartments, duplexes, and houses adjacent to campus and in the Fairmount Circle area. The Coordinator will focus on the residential community, fostering positive relationships with students and community members, and supervising student leaders. The Coordinator will serve as a liaison between residents, the Office of Residence Life, and the property management.
Duties and Responsibilities
Residential Student Neighborhood Community Development Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop an expanding residential community of third- and fourth-year students living in apartments, duplexes, and houses adjacent to campus
  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate 4 undergraduate Residential Neighborhood Assistants (RNAs)
  • Serve as the primary contact and liaison for the student residents, the Office of Residence Life, and the university’s property management partner.
  • Implement “good neighbor” relationship-building initiatives with Shaker Heights and University Heights residents
  • Advise and guide RNAs on appropriate student interventions
  • Advise a student neighborhood council
  • Hear student conduct cases and educate students within the restorative justice process
  • Collaborate with campus partners to intervene with and support students of concern and students at-risk
  • Mediate elevated conflicts that occur between roommates and among residents
  • Serve in the on-call duty rotation and support after-hours processes that ensure student safety
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of large-scale programming initiatives within the Upperclass Neighborhoods
  • Manage budget lines for programming and staff development
  • Liaise with campus Facilities in collaboration with the Associate Director of Residence Life for Residential Operations to address facility concerns in relevant properties
Departmental Responsibilities
  • Supports housing operations functions, including occupancy management, access control, follow-up on facilities and housekeeping concerns, and consistent oversight of facility needs, especially those that affect the student experience
  • Support significant departmental initiatives based on interests and needs of the Office of Residence Life. Initiatives may include:
    • Undergraduate staff training and development: Assist in implementing August, January, and Spring undergraduate staff training periods; lead ongoing RNA or Resident Assistant development opportunities
    • Undergraduate staff recruitment and selection: Assist in marketing for and selection of undergraduate staff positions including interviewing candidates and other hiring processes
    • Marketing: Increase the social media presence of the Office of Residence Life, including the development of engagement campaigns. Develop innovative ways of sharing information about departmental processes with undergraduate students.
  • Contribute significantly to office, divisional, and institutional commitments as assigned
  • Perform occasional evening and weekend responsibilities
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree strongly preferred
  • Previous residence life or housing experience
  • Previous student staff supervision experience
  • Thorough knowledge of student development, student leadership and community development theories
  • Strong oral and written communication and critical thinking skills
  • Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, or related field
  • Previous experience working with upper-class residential students in apartment or house settings
Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
This position works in-person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations. Availability to work some nights and weekends when needed in order to ensure a quality student experience is an expectation for this position.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary will be $37,000 – $39,000, commensurate with qualifications. The position also includes an apartment and a University meal plan, as well as JCU’s generous Total Rewards package that includes health and dental insurance options, paid vacation, personal, sick, and mission time, holidays, 403 (b) retirement plan, life insurance, and tuition remission benefits for you, your spouse, and children.
