Summary
John Carroll University seeks a Director of Sponsored Programs who will continue to grow the University’s external funding portfolio, across all academic divisions, in alignment with its mission and strategic plan. The University has increased its sponsored program portfolio in terms of grant dollars awarded by 230% in the past five years, with 85% of funding coming from federal sponsors. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the strategic pursuit of grants and oversight of sponsored programs. They also will assess the need for and lead the development and implementation of grant- and contract-related policy and procedure changes. This role will involve oversight of pre-award development and submission of proposals; award acceptance and contract negotiation; and post-award management and compliance with all government, grantor, and University policies. This role also oversees research compliance to include human subjects (IRB), animal subjects (IACUC), biohazards (IBC), and financial conflict of interest.
The director will mentor faculty in seeking and applying for funding opportunities that enable them to attain their research and teaching goals, including identifying ideal funding sources for specific projects and programs, and assisting in the grant application process. They will keep faculty and staff informed about upcoming government, corporate, and foundation grants and other relevant information, as well as determine University funding needs. They will work with college deans and academic leaders to identify and pursue grant opportunities that advance the university’s strategic goals and mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Identifies, promotes, and supports grant-seeking efforts.
  • Manages the Office of Sponsored Programs, its activities, programs, budget, and operation.
  • Supervises a full-time Post-Award Grant Administrator.
  • Supervises a part-time Research Compliance Administrator.
  • Works closely with the University’s Manager of Endowment and Grant Accounts as well as its Advancement division; consults with the Office of Legal Affairs when appropriate.
  • Prepares, negotiates, and administers subawards to partner institutions.
  • Serves as liaison to external funding agencies as appropriate.
  • Consults with faculty and students on grant proposals and research protocols; communicates with other departments/divisions regarding grant and research compliance issues; communicates with offices outside of the university, usually to troubleshoot conflicts or aid collaborations and grant submissions.
  • Serves on campus committees related to external funding, including the Institutional Review Board and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in higher education sponsored projects, contracts, cooperative agreements and grant administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with strategic planning and/or goal-setting.
  • Knowledge of federal proposal submission systems and regulations; accounting and financial reporting; human and animal research issues.
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communications, organization, and management.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures, as well as explain them to a variety of constituents.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel for training purposes.
  • Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • CRA (Certified Research Administrator); CPRA (Certified Pre-Award Research Administrator); CFRA (Certified Financial Research Administrator); CIP (Certified IRB Professional); CIM (Certified IRB Manager). [Listed in order of preference.]
  • Supervisory experience.
Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
This position works in-person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. However, this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary will be $70,000 – $88,000, commensurate with qualifications.
