Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is Hiring a Pre-Resident Fellow (PRF) – NEUROSURGERY Near Richmond, NY

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center and accredited stroke center. A community-based hospital conveniently located in Queens, NY we provide innovative and comprehensive surgical care to treat patients with a wide range of rare and complex conditions.

The Department of Neurosurgery at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center provides innovative and comprehensive surgical care to treat patients with a wide range of rare and complex conditions. Our team of highly trained and experienced neurosurgeons use the latest minimally invasive technology and surgical interventions to treat conditions affecting the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system.

We are currently seeking a pre-residency fellow to work alongside neurosurgeons, neuro intensive care neurologists, neurologists, and advanced care providers. Our ideal candidates will be flexible, willing, and able to work a combination of days, nights, and weekends.

DUTIES:

  • Patient Care: The primary responsibility of a pre-residency fellow is to provide patient care under the supervision of the neurosurgery attendings. This includes diagnosing conditions, creating treatment plans, monitoring progress, and performing procedures.
  • Communication: must effectively communicate with patients, their families, and other healthcare providers; explain diagnoses, treatment options, and possible outcomes clearly and compassionately.
  • Medical Procedures: perform procedures under the supervision of attendings, including placement of external ventricular drains, ICP monitors, lumbar punctures, lumbar drains, and arterial lines.
  • Rounds: participate in daily rounds, check on the status of patients, discuss the plan for the day, and monitor progress.
  • Documentation: accurately document findings, diagnoses, treatments, and patient interactions in the medical record.
  • Medical Research: participation in medical research is required. This could include conducting literature reviews, participating in ongoing research, or even developing their own research project, which can be basic, translational, or clinical.
  • On-Call Duties: On-call shifts will be required and determined by attendings. During this time, they must be available to handle any emergencies or issues that arise with their patients with supervision by attending.
  • Continuing Education: continue learning and staying up-to-date on the latest medical research, procedures, and practices. This will be done with lectures, seminars, and conferences. Participation and giving lectures will be required.
  • Teamwork: must work collaboratively with nurses, other doctors, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ethics: must adhere to the principles of medical ethics, including maintaining patient confidentiality and treating each patient with respect and dignity.

Expectation of Tasks (including but not limited to):

  • Evaluate Neurosurgical patients and obtain appropriate history
  • Perform focused neurological exam
  • Independently read imaging and identify neuroradiographic pathology
  • Formulate preliminary consult plan and potential surgical plan independently
  • Identify patients needing emergent neurosurgical intervention
  • Perform bedside procedures such as placement of EVD and ICP monitors
  • Set up operative cases and assist in operative cases

REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical School.
  • Eligible for a limited license, New York State Department of Education is required.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required.

SALARY: $ 76.000 anually
