About the Job

The Research Development and Grants Management Office's (RDGMO) mission aligns with the overarching mission of The Hormel Institute. Our team of dedicated pre-award, post-award, and research development experts is devoted to advancing knowledge in the biological sciences with applications in medicine and agriculture. The RDGMO oversees all post-award and pre-award activities for researchers at The Hormel Institute. We facilitate cutting-edge research by offering comprehensive research administration support to 26 faculty members and their labs. Our roles include submitting grants from NSF, NIH, and DoD to various foundations, industry partners, and others. We foster partnerships, connecting researchers of all career stages to resources, ensuring compliance, and nurturing a culture of continuous learning as a team. By empowering researchers, we play a pivotal role in driving innovation and growing the research enterprise of The Hormel Institute.
The Research Development Coordinator , reporting to the Research Development Director, will join a dynamic team at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota (located in Austin, Minnesota) responsible for providing a full range of services to the researchers at The Hormel Institute. Reporting to the Research Development Director, the Research Development Coordinator will manage a small amount of grant activity, including proposal and progress report submissions, compliance monitoring, data and file management, and other research development and administrative tasks. This position works closely with faculty, research personnel, post-award and finance staff, central Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) staff, and other partners to facilitate proposal and grant activities for The Hormel Institute (HI), University of Minnesota and The University of Minnesota, Rochester (UMR) campus. With oversight and direction from the Research Development Director, this position administers The Hormel Institute's Internal Grants Program and its metrics.
Focus of Job Responsibilities
Internal Grants Program Administration - 35%
Administration of the HI Internal Grants Program, managing logistics of annual funding cycles and additional funding opportunities as they arise.
Work in the InfoReady platform to design funding opportunities, collect applications, reviews, and track outcomes of internal grants. Keep abreast of InfoReady updates via training.
Liaison with the study section chair, Research Development Director, reviewers, and applicants.
Answer questions and troubleshoot for applicants with an understanding of the funding mechanism's intent and the InfoReady platform.
Maintaining the internal grants post-award database
Folder and file maintenance of internal grants
Review applications for completeness and ensure applications are compliant and that proposed budgets are allowable.
Selects external reviewers, ensuring that expertise is appropriate and diverse.
Facilitate review sessions in collaboration with the Study Section Lead.
Communicate award terms, award, and rejection notices.
Track and analyze internal grants program metrics and report to HI leadership.
Research Development Initiatives - 30%
Identify funding opportunities and partnerships based on an understanding of the research projects, interests, and activities of HI's researchers.
Provide or coordinate training with the Research Librarian on using funding identification tools (e.g., Pivot).
Track and analyze data on internal and external trends that may impact the research enterprise of the institute.
Identify resources for developing competitive research proposals.
Support research development initiatives designed to enhance the development of faculty and lab personnel.
Pre-award Proposal Services and Progress Reports - 30%
In partnership with Principal Investigators, review the requirements of funding opportunities, prepare budgets for, compile components of, and submit grant applications for sponsored research.
Liaise closely with the Research Development & Grants Management team and SPA on requirements and deadlines, as well as with collaborators and other UMN personnel.
Determine proposal submission timelines and workflow, conducting a preliminary review of faculty proposals for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to funding agency/HI/UMN policies and procedures.
Prepare administrative information for proposals.
Manage Other Support documentation for assigned PIs and manage Just-in-Time requests in collaboration with SPA.
Respond to issues that arise from the sponsor or the investigator before the award.
Identify novel circumstances and collect information for discussion with senior staff when needed.
Manage a calendar of all progress reports required by funding agencies, initiate and coordinate budget and document collection in collaboration with faculty, subawards, and post-award staff.
Identify, review, and communicate funding opportunities to assigned PIs. Target searches for opportunities well-suited to specific HI strategic priorities, team science, and specific HI-supported faculty research areas.
Continuously monitor and respond to investigators' needs for training and education regarding compliance, grant writing, and budgeting.
Create and maintain research administrative documents such as biosketches, current and pending support documents, facilities, equipment, etc., for grant applications.
Participate in onboarding new faculty, including thorough one-on-one meetings to discuss the grant application process, tailor funding opportunity searches, and communicate training needed for Principal Investigators.
Training and Development - 5%
Actively identify and participate in training with guidance from the Research Development Director.
Participate in one-on-one and team meetings.
Serve on UMN and external committees.

Work Profile

Flexible Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
BA/BS degree plus at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years.
Attention to detail.
Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
A high level of accountability and follow-through.
