Description
Job Summary
The Business Manager of the Boston Section of the CLIENT, with the volunteers, drives strategy and program development and brings strategy and program proposals to the Boston Section. He or she ensures the Boston Section conducts its business in a lawful manner.
Communicate regularly with the Boston Section Executive Committee leaders regarding the progress of the Boston Section toward its goals, the identification of any problems, and their resolution.
Directs the financial affairs of the Boston Section of approximately $370K, may financially manage conferences that may exceed $5M, and ensures they are conducted within prescribed budgets and professionally and ethically. Act as International Microwave Symposium (IMS) Treasurer when the CLIENT MTT-S/IMS Treasurer Memorandum of Understanding is in effect.
Acts as Managing Editor of the Boston Section newsletter, The Reflector.
Facilitates the research and identification of additional sources of revenue and funding, and with approval of the Boston Section Executive Committee and its officers, implements those models in a timely and complete manner.
Assists the unit in the development of programs and services that are beneficial to their membership.
Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Develop and execute the operating plan of the Boston Section in conjunction with the Boston Section Chair and the Boston Section Executive Committee. Responsible for drafting an operating plan for the Boston Section that will meet the goals of the CLIENT Boston Section as outlined by the Executive Committee. This should address all key aspects of the section activity: financial, staffing, membership, volunteer recruitment, education, and training.
  • 2. Manages and maintains relationships and communications with the unit ExCom and unit volunteers. Serves as the main POC for over a dozen standing and ad-hoc committees of the Boston Section. Recruit volunteers for these committees. Works with the Nominating Committee to identify and recruit new volunteers for the ExCom and other committees of the Boston Section. Responsible for maintaining a program to actively recruit additional volunteers as needed.
  • 3. Steward of the Governance Process. Acts as parliamentarian for the section. Ensures proper rules, policies, and procedures of the CLIENT are maintained at all times for section-level meetings and assists chapter sub-units of the same.
  • 4. Directs Business Operations of the unit. Ensure the Boston Section operates following proper business procedures and maintains the financial integrity of the Boston Section. Will report status to the Executive Committee on the current and forecast status of the business operations of the section and make recommendations when needed.
  • 5. Enhances revenue. Will be required to identify areas where revenue can/should be enhanced to fulfill the goals of the Boston Section and its operating plan. Will work in conjunction with multiple standing committees of the Boston Section to identify these areas make recommendations to the Executive Committee and implement the policies of the Executive Committee
  • 6. Identifies unit staffing requirements. Will assess the requirements for staffing the Boston Section office including its evening and weekend lecture series staffing needs as well as the staffing needs for the multiple conferences the Boston Section manages for itself and other CLIENT sub-units.
  • 7. Enhances communication with the unit membership. Charged to maintain ongoing communication with the unit membership. Will be responsible for continuing current methods of communication (managing editor of paper newsletter, email blasts, and website) and identifying new methods to further enhance the unit membership and create a more engaged relationship between the section and the member.
  • 8. Formulates 2 - 3 year plan for unit for revenue forecasts. Will be required to strategize to draft revenue/expenses forecasts up to 3 years in the future to maintain the financial integrity of the Boston Section.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Consideration may be given to non-degreed. individuals whose experience and credentials are considered equivalent.
Work Experience
  • 4-7 years of relevant experience in management roles, with responsibility for profit-loss
  • Experience drafting and managing budgets, and cash flow analysis, including Financial Management and Annual Reporting
  • Experience in not-for-profit organization management preferred.
