Illinois Institute of Technology is Hiring an Assistant Director for Scholar Services Near Chicago, IL

The Office of Global Services ( OGS ) provides leadership and support for the Illinois Institute of Technology’s efforts to internationalize its campus. At IIT , international students and scholars from around the world are part of our community, and this position supports internalization efforts by serving as a resource to students, scholars, faculty, and campus partners in meeting the needs of the international community through immigration services.
The Assistant Director of Scholar Services will offer advanced expertise on complex immigration, cultural and personal related matters relevant to Illinois Tech’s scholar population. The position will manage a diverse caseload and will coordinate support for the international populations throughout the University, and the different departments that host them.
Extensive knowledge of the F-1, J-1, H-1B, TN-1, F-1 OPT , STEM OPT are necessary to advise international employees and scholars at Illinois Tech. The Assistant Director will develop, and deliver workshop presentations, online resources along with other programs and tools. The Assistant Director will represent OGS and Illinois Tech within appropriate internal committees and externally to government agencies and off-campus organizations. The Assistant Director will assist the Senior Director in the development of relevant policies, communications and training for IIT administrators, employees, and scholars, as needed.
COMMUNICATIONS
Provide excellent customer service to the entire international scholar population at IIT ; including campus partners, local, state and federal agencies in ensuring immigration compliance of student records
CUSTOMER SERVICE
This position requires written, verbal, electronic communication to the staff of the International Center, and all current and incoming student and scholar population.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 5-7 years’ relevant experience preferred. Preferred experience with immigration for international employees and scholars in higher education environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong knowledge of J-1, H-1B, TN-1 F-1 OPT and STEM , Dept. of Labor, Permanent Residence regulations, SEVIS , are required. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required.
Knowledge & Skills
Ability to work both independently and as a constructive, collaborative member of team efforts with people at all levels within the University and various governmental agencies. Ability to exercise sound, individual judgment in solving problems. Must possess well¬ developed research, writing, presentation, and analytical skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is needed, and experience or comfort in learning new applications to handle web publishing. Experience with cross-cultural exchange and/or studying or working overseas is strongly preferred. Per federal regulations, in order to be an Alternate Responsible Officer with responsibilities for the Exchange Visitor Program, U.S. citizen or permanent residence is required.
SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY
May supervise a student coordinator in the future.

Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibility
Advise hiring departments, employees, and scholars on complex immigration requirements, permissions, benefits, applications, and procedures on employment based non-immigrant statuses H-1B, J-1, TN-1 statuses.
Prepare immigration paperwork for international employees in relation the H-1B and TN-1 statuses
Submit immigration paperwork for international employees in relation to the H-1B and TN-1 statuses
Advise dependent spouses/partners and children on immigration permissions, responsibilities, resources, etc.
Advise international employees and scholars on travel issues and visa stamp renewals
Counsel and triage employee concerns, anticipating potential immigration consequences or opportunities, and make appropriate resource referrals.
Review requests from departments and review Exchange Visitor Program requirements with departments and potential scholars. Prepare DS-2019’s, participate in check-¬in process for J-1 scholars by meeting with international employees and department administrators, reviewing documentation, reviewing requirements for maintaining immigration status.
Ensure SEVIS and Terra Dotta (TD) is up to date with relevant information for all J-1 scholars at Illinois Tech.
Coordinate Immigration training sessions for departmental administrators throughout the University

Key Responsibility
Advise F1 students, J1 students and J-1 scholars on immigration regulations, cultural adjustment, academic and English language difficulties, financial concerns and general orientation to life in the U.S.
Provide consistent and correct information, and keep abreast of current issues affecting student population.
Oversee & Process student documents including but not limited to: Program extension, CPT , OPT , STEM OPT Extension, Transfer Out, Academic Training, etc. Regulatory Compliance:
Act as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ) for F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars.
Monitor international student and/or scholar compliance with government regulations
Remain current with SEVIS -related and regulatory updates pertaining to international students and scholars to ensure institutional compliance.
Assist Director as needed in compliance reporting including: SEVIS Registration, address and employment updates and maintenance of status.
