Job Summary
In order for students with disabilities to overcome limitations to the pursuit of their education, the Abilities Office of Disabled Student Services provides services classified as reasonable accommodations such as note takers, readers, sign language interpreters, equipment loans, priority registration, advocacy and other accommodations. A computer lab with adaptive technology/software is also available. These services are provided to students who identify themselves and supply verification of the existence of a disabling condition. A person is considered disabled when he or she has a mental of physical impairment that hinders the performance of one or more major life functions such as mobility, hearing, sight, and learning. These services are provided in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990). Services are provided at no cost to all Chicago State University students with verified disabilities. Students who need special parking permits should apply of the Secretary of State driving facility located at 99th Street and King Drive. The Abilities Office is located in the Counseling Center in the Cordell Reed Student Union Building, room 190,. The Director of Abilities Services reports to the Director of the Counseling Center.
Job Description
1. Act as service coordinator for assigned students. Counsels students on academic issues; determine if additional counseling is required; refer to other support sources on campus or in the community as necessary.
a. Review documentation to determine if students are eligible for services based on federal, state, and University guidelines and laws.
b. Work with students to determine appropriate academic accommodations and services and discuss students' academic performance and use of services as needed; Assist students with academic concerns directly related to disabilities.
c. Assist students in developing strategies/skills to advocate for their own academic accommodations and develop their independence.
d. Meet with assigned students each semester; confirm that they are receiving requested services.
e. Facilitate contact with Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services and other agencies as appropriate.
f. Provide outreach, educate and collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance their understanding regarding the need for reasonable accommodations and to ensure that the accommodations do not fundamentally alter the program of study.
2. Provide prospective student outreach.
a. Meet with individual students and their families, high school personnel, and student groups visiting the University to discuss academic accommodations and available services.
b. Attend transition events/college fairs sponsored by metropolitan Chicago area high schools to discuss admission criteria and services for students with disabilities at the University.
c. Participate in Chicago State University events and transition programming.
3. Participate in campus, citywide and statewide committees when invited and appropriate.
4. Maintain records, documentation, and data as directed and in accordance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other federal, state, University policies and laws.
5. Maintain knowledge of current legislation and national, state, and local issues affecting access for students with disabilities.

7. Supervise office clerks/assistants and student workers as assigned.
8. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Communicative Disorders, Student Affairs, Counseling or closely related field with at least two years of effective experience in disability support services or closely related field is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Evidence of counseling skills, interpersonal relations, and communications skills required.
  • The ability to solve problems, work independently, work with teams, and be a creative thinker.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 and ADA regulation and their appropriate implementation in higher education is required, as well as Division of Vocational Rehabilitation policies and practices is essential.
