Hennepin County is Hiring an Attorney, Associate Near Minneapolis, MN

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office (CAO) is seeking to fill Associate Attorney positions. The CAO serves as the chief prosecutor of all felony and juvenile crimes in Hennepin County. The CAO is also responsible for providing legal counsel to the Board of Commissioners and all county departments, as well as representing the county government in civil lawsuits, child support matters and child protection actions.
Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visitemployee referral program.
Location and hours:
These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.
About this position:These are full-time, benefit earning positions. This position is internally classified as an Attorney, Associate.Click here to view the job classification specification.In this position, you will:
  • Prepare cases for prosecution of criminal statutes and/or fraud cases for prosecutions.
  • Try civil and criminal cases and prosecute appeals.
  • Interview prospective complainants and police officers relative to the violation of statutes and filing of complaints.
  • Perform legal work involved in the purchase and sale of real property by the county.
  • Render legal opinions and resolutions, motions, contracts, and other legal documents.
  • Interpret and furnish information regarding county ordinances, check specifications, contracts, and special assessment proceedings.
  • Examine general claims, warrants, and demands against the county to determine their legality; examine and approve deeds, bonds, contracts, and other documents.
  • Confer with and provide legal advice to county departments regarding the legality of proposed expenditures and other actions.
  • Prepare briefs, opinions, pleadings, and other legal papers; confer with attorneys, other county employees and other interested parties regarding criminal prosecutions or civil cases.
  • Conduct necessary legal research; keep case records and make reports; perform necessary research, work investigations, and preparation of briefs for the trial of cases involving criminal prosecution.
Need to have:
  • Admission to the Bar of the State of Minnesota.
Nice to have:
  • Experience working in a public law office.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Local laws and ordinances, established precedents, and legal reference sources.
    • The principles, methods, and practices of legal research and investigation.
    • Judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.
    • The pleading and practice of effective presentation of court cases.
  • Ability to:
    • Provide excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and persuasive public speaking skills.
    • Charge criminal cases.
    • Try cases independently.
    • Establish working relationships and to collaborate with other county departments.
