Through its core values of innovation, engagement, and health equity, HCPH strives to bring meaningful solutions to public health issues while keeping Harris County healthy and vibrant.Brief Position Overview:Under the supervision of the Lead Veterinary Technician and the Medical Services Manager, the Veterinarian Technician for the Clinic position supports the veterinarians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets, educates clients on all aspects of pet health, and ensures a safe and effective clinic environment. This position participates in clinical and animal care activities that support the HCPH VPH Pet Wellness program and serves as support to other sections as needed.Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Educate clients on responsible pet ownership, vaccinations, infectious disease, preventatives and treatments. Schedules appointments, prepares receipts and maintains medical records within Avimark database.
  • Collects specimens, performs in-clinic diagnostic laboratory tests, administration of medications and treatments under the guidance of the attending veterinarian. Prepares samples for submission to reference labs.
  • Assist veterinarian with veterinary medicine and surgery in any appropriate capacity.
  • Obtain and record patient histories, vital signs and weights.
  • Clean and stock medical and surgical areas, maintain laboratory and surgical equipment and sterilizes surgical instruments.
  • Follows protocols for safe induction of anesthesia, monitors animals while under anesthesia and during recovery. Also, responsible for dispensing medications as prescribed by the Veterinarian.
  • Performs radiographs based on instructions and guidance of attending veterinarian.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
  • At least six (6) months of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary practice or animal care environment is required OR completion of a veterinary assistance or technical program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be comfortable working with animals.
  • Must be able to cope with the difficulties associated with animal euthanasia.
  • Must have or be able to acquire the skills needed to provide humane animal restraint, place indwelling catheters, and perform venipunctures.

  • Associate’s Degree 
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current licensure as a Veterinary Technician with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). 
Location:

Hours: 
  • Full-Time; 40 hours per week. This position requires flexibility in schedules.
Work Environment:
  • This job operates in an animal shelter environment.
Physical Demands:
  • Will be required to bend, lift, stoop and stand for long periods of time.
  • Frequent lifting of animals or materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available. 

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
