Position Title: PARALEGAL
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyzes legal documents, including pleadings, filings, decrees, and agreed orders, for compliance with Court procedures, processes, and requirements.
  • Works collaboratively with the Staff Attorney to review all decrees, shared parenting plans, parenting orders, associated orders, agreed entries, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, Divisions of Property Orders, etc. for accuracy prior to the submission to the judicial officers.
  • Ensures that all required statutory language and references are included in the decrees presented for signature.
  • Ensures issues are addressed at the time of filing to avoid complications or errors that could lead to further litigation.
  • Answers inquiries of litigants and attorneys, electronically, in person, and telephonically. Provides information to assist self-represented litigants in gaining access to court services. Answers questions, reviews documents, and directs self-represented litigants and members of the public to the proper court office for additional assistance as appropriate.
Provides information and explanations about a variety of court processes, court rules, official documents, and forms. Interacts with all other departments within the court to accomplish the
directives of the duly elected Judges and Court Administration. Delivers clear, concise answers to various questions that attorneys, the public, or court personnel may have regarding legal information, procedures, case settings, etc. Directs litigants to various resources to assist them in completing their paperwork or securing legal advice.
Contacts attorneys and litigants for corrections. Updates CMS and Live Lists to reflect all case activity taken, including but not limited to case tracking, running record, and the support order screen. Prepares and updates checklist of items to be addressed in Separation Agreements and Agreed Entries. Forwards to CSEA CE unit all new and modified case information to allow for creation and modification of SETS support account. Processes dismissals generated by Judges and Magistrates. Prepares mailing and correspondence as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of training and work experience that indicates possession of skills, knowledge, and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is:
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or other applicable field of study or Associate’s degree in paralegal studies and one to three years of experience including administrative work, preferably in a law office, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Preferred Ohio Bar Paralegal Certification.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS(may be developed after employment)
Knowledge of: Applicable domestic relations laws, child support statutes, and regulations relating to the setting, modification, and termination of child and medical support orders; domestic violence statutes and DVCPO procedures, rules of civil and trial procedure, rules of evidence, Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct,
case law regarding property division, child and spousal support, contempt, domestic violence and interpretation of decrees, agreements, and previous decisions. Applicable procedures and practices of the Court of Domestic Relations; including familiarity with the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Rules of Superintendence, Local Rules of Practice, the Court’s personnel policies, proper courtroom etiquette, and basic computer and office equipment skills.
Ability to: Professionally interact with attorneys, litigants, and court personnel. Recognize and handle sensitive and confidential matters in a professional and discreet manner. Ability to work under pressure and maintain composure in dealing with often anxious and confused people seeking help from the Court. Maintain patience and tolerance when working with people seeking services during difficult and complex personal situations. Accept constructive criticism and direction; must be professional at all times and must work cooperatively with all other departments within the Court and persons from other Courts, agencies, and related departments. Prioritize tasks and delegate as necessary and appropriate; maintain regular attendance, proper dress, and a positive attitude. Treat litigants and counsel with respect and dignity.
Skill in: Effective verbal and written communication, problem-solving, time management, organization of work assignments, and applicable computer programs. Working independently and remaining self-motivated. Completing tasks timely and free from excessive and or recurring mistakes.

Work Hours: Full-time/70 hours bi-weekly
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
Starting Salary:
$26.37 hourly, non-exempt
