Girl Scouts of Western Washington is Hiring a Head Lifeguard- Camp River Ranch Near Carnation, WA

Description

This summer, Girl Scouts of Western Washington (GSWW) is offering an exciting NEW opportunity to experience summer at beautiful Camp River Ranch, a lakefront property nestled in a rainforest in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in Carnation. The Head Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring safe, educational, age-appropriate activities on Lake Langlois and the Tolt River for guests visiting Camp River Ranch. 

The Head Lifeguard supervises lifeguards and boating specialists and is responsible for scheduling staff breaks, assignment areas, and performing skill verifications and in-services for all lifeguards. The Head Lifeguard will be responsible for lifeguarding during swim times as well as during boating activities with guests, campers, and staff throughout the summer. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as the typical schedule for this position will be Wednesday- Sunday. Overnight housing is optional, staff are not required to stay on camp. Meals will not be provided, however, space to cook and store food will be available.

General Responsibilities  

  • Ensure work areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association, GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints, and GSWW
  • Responsible for administering the waterfront program by American Red Cross standards, American Camp Association standards, and GS Safety Activity Checkpoints 
  • Coordinating all phases of the waterfront programming and all waterfront-related activities including, but not limited to: swimming, small craft instruction, free swims, kayaking, canoeing, etc.
  • Responsible for supervision, scheduling and direction of waterfront staff 
  • Coordinating the with the Business manager to create waterfront program scheduling for guests 
  • Responsible for seeing that the waterfront facilities, equipment, and supplies are maintained in working order 
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate inventory records, seeing that needed supplies and equipment are ordered, repaired, and/or maintained. 
  • Responsible for evaluating the program and waterfront staff, making recommendations concerning supplies, equipment, and waterfront program for the following summer. 
  • Responsible for maintaining effective work relationships with staff and creating harmonious relationships with campers and staff 
  • Exhibits mature decision-making and responsibility at all times 
  • Perform as-needed rescues of distressed swimmers and capsized watercraft 
  • Observe and assess camper and staff behavior for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques regarding compliance with all camp policies
  • Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including but not limited to incident reports, evaluations, and weekly schedules 
  • Set a good example by demonstrating maturity, effective communication, cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, sharing, and following camp policy among other traits. 
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Highschool Diploma/GED is required
  • Proven good judgment in anticipating and preventing accidents, risk management, and effectiveness in emergency situations. 
  • Proven ability to work with, communicate with, and teach youth, ages six through seventeen. 
  • Proven ability to work well with, train, and supervise staff. 
  • American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard certification with waterfront module or approved equivalent or willingness to obtain (offered during staff training) 
  • American Red Cross Small Craft Safety qualified in Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing or willingness to obtain qualification (offered during staff training) 
  • Experience working and managing waterfront programming 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to waterfront activities
  • Ability to drive a golf cart or camp vehicle to respond quickly to guest needs 
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to swim and perform rescues, especially in cold, natural bodies of water 
  • Ability to hike 5 miles of uneven terrain,
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control 
  • Ability to receive instruction and supervision 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 25 years old 
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certificate or equivalent
  • Previous experience working in a Girl Scout and/or camp setting 
  • Previous experience supervising staff
  • Experience supervising swimmers and boaters at a lakefront or similar environment 
  • Experience canoeing and kayaking in a flat-water environment 
  • Comfort with and ability to perform various camp activities including outdoor cooking, chopping wood, fire building, etc. 
  • Valid Driver’s license for at least 5 years, clean driving record, and ability to drive a 12-passenger van
