Girl Scouts of Western Washington is Hiring a Boating Specialist- Camp River Ranch Near Carnation, WA

Description

This summer, Girl Scouts of Western Washington (GSWW) is offering an exciting NEW opportunity to experience summer at beautiful Camp River Ranch, a lakefront property nestled in a rainforest in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in Carnation. The Boating Specialist works directly with the Camp Program team to ensure a safe and fun environment for boating at Camp River Ranch. 

The Boating Specialist spend their days supervising the staff and campers during the boating activities at the camp waterfront, including, but not limited to, canoes, kayaks, or other boating activities with a group. The Boating Specialist adds to the harmonious camp operations by exhibiting positive camper engagement. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as the typical schedule for this position will be Wednesday- Sunday. Overnight housing is optional, staff are not required to stay on camp. Meals will not be provided, however, space to cook and store food will be available.

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure work areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association and Girl Scouts of Western Washington 
  • Responsible for boating and lifeguarding by American Red Cross Certification standards, American Camp Association standards, and Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints 
  • Maintain visual and auditory awareness of all participants in the assigned waterfront area 
  • Teach and ensure the use of appropriate techniques for boating and using boating equipment 
  • Encourage respect for others, the environment, and personal property 
  • Observe and assess camper behavior for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques 
  • Participate in all aspects of camp life, nature walks, activities, campfire, staff training, meetings, clean-up of camp, and camp closing 
  • Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including Incident Reports and evaluations 
  • Carry out established duties regarding camper health, safety, and program goals 
  • Communicate clearly with supervising staff 
  • Set a good example by demonstrating maturity, good communication techniques, cleanliness, good hygiene, punctuality, sportsmanship, sharing, and following rules. 
  • Responsible for checking that the boating and waterfront facilities, equipment, and supplies are maintained in the best possible working order, along with reporting any repairs needed to the appropriate camp staff 
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as delegated. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • At least 18 years of age 
  • American Red Cross Small Craft Safety Qualified in Canoeing, Kayaking and Boating (or approved equivalent under Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and the American Camp Association) or willingness to obtain 
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to perform rescues in cold water
  • Exhibits mature decision-making 
  • Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills 
  • Ability to work with, communicate with and teach guests of all ages (children and adults) 
  • Continuous ability to work well on a team 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to waterfront activities 
  • Ability to hike 5 miles of uneven terrain 
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control 
  • Ability to receive instruction and supervision 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard qualification (or approved equivalent under Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and the American Camp Association) or equivalent or willingness to obtain (offered during staff training) 
  • Experience supervising swimmers and boaters at a lakefront or similar environment 
  • Experience using canoes, row boats, and kayaks in a flat-water environment 
  • Experience teaching boating techniques and equipment usage 
  • Experience as a lifeguard, current Red Cross lifeguard certification or equivalent, or ability to obtain certification (will be offered during staff training) 
  • Knowledge of Girl Scouts and Girl Scout camp preferred
  • Ability to communicate and work with staff and campers from diverse backgrounds in a productive and collaborative way
  • Comfort with and ability to perform various camp activities outside of waterfront
