Job Overview
The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) provides professional nursing care to individuals participating in inpatient and outpatient clinical research studies as well as standard of care patients. They work independently with minimal supervision following institutional, departmental, and nursing guidelines; and functions as an essential member of the multidisciplinary team that performs clinical research studies while simultaneously providing direct care to research subjects or patients of various health conditions and of different age groups.
The CRN participates in collaborative studies under the CTSA, and responsible and accountable for collection of specimens and/or data collection within the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and in other clinical areas as required for the implementation of approved protocols. They are well versed in the safety and regulatory aspects of clinical studies; adheres to safety guidelines and protocol compliance, conducts treatment and education, assists with data management, and maintains knowledge of regulations that apply to the safe conduct of clinical research.
The CRN takes a leadership role as primary nurse, working as liaison between the study team, collaborating institutions, and the CRU to provide efficient implementation of the study protocol; and performs all functions in accordance with all applicable District of Columbia and federal laws and regulations and Georgetown's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
The CRN is required to work days, nights and/or weekends as scheduled or as required by the CRU census.
Work Interactions
The Clinical Research Nurse operates as part of a team of both nursing staff and research assistants who assist the study coordinator and Investigator in protocol implementation; and assure a smooth implementation of the protocol on the CRU and that the investigator's research study is implemented according to protocol. They provide education to other staff members at the CRU or collaborating institutions, as needed, regarding protocols for which they are the primary nurse; and provide standard of care to non-research patients. The CRN interacts with the multidisciplinary team, including study coordinators, investigators, research assistants, subjects and other health care professionals throughout the hospital system, at our CTSA partner's institutions, and within the community. These interactions include critical communications regarding patient's status as well as response to treatment.
Qualifications
Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia
3 years of nursing experience - acute care nursing preferred
Basic Cardiac Lift Support certification - Advanced Cardiac Life Support preferred
Solid basic nursing skills, including but not limited to excellent phlebotomy and IV skills, ACLS, assessment and implementation of nursing care procedures
Basic computer skills for use in daily job functions
Attention to detail, and excellent organizational and communication skills
Self-directed and motivated with ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to adapt to changing patient care needs that are driven by the research environment on the CRU
Eagerness to learn and quickly master new procedures and technology
Availability and willingness to work days, nights and/or weekends as scheduled or as required by the CRU census
Preferred qualifications
Chemotherapy certification
Research experience
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
