Title: Safety Specialist
Reports To: Plant Manager
Status: Full Time / Hourly (Non-Exempt); 40 hours/week, or additional hours as needed to support organization and individual goals.
Job Requirements
  • Associate's Degree in related field, or equivalent education and work experience may be combined to meet this requirement
  • Ability to communicate, implement, and coordinate comprehensive health and safety accident prevention programs
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to organize a multitude of simultaneous projects
  • Ability to lead and direct teams and/or committees
  • Excellent customer relation, communication, and team building skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to travel: domestic and internationally
Job Preferences
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of safety related experience
  • Knowledge of the regulations established by the federal Occupational Safety and Healthy Act (OSHA)
  • In-depth knowledge of plant operations
  • Advanced problem solving skills
Job Summary
To manage and coordinate all safety activities for the manufacturing site. Assist with planning, implementing, and maintaining a variety of occupational health, safety, and environmental programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees.
Essential Job Functions
  • Maintain awareness of applicable safety and health regulations and make recommendations for their implementation.
  • Complete, coordinate, and maintain training for safety programs (hazardous communication/SDS, energy control power lockout, emergency response, etc.)
  • Responsible for monitoring adherence to Corporate/Plant safety programs by employees and subcontractors including carrying out delegated authority to stop operations until safe work practices are re-established.
  • Lead plant safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports and recommendations.
  • Develop controls for identified hazards and coordinate the implementation of controls from results of hazard analysis (design in safety, JSA, etc.); measure and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard control systems, policies, and procedures; recommend changes that reflect improved opportunities to eliminate workplace accidents and injuries.
  • Organize and conduct training programs for new hire orientation to include job safety analysis, personal protective equipment evaluations, and on the job training oversight.
  • Oversee the plant accident investigation process.
  • Lead safety committee activities.
  • Ensure corporate compliance calendar is current and maintained.
  • Assist with environmental compliance programs related to hazardous wastes, air permitting, water pollution control, etc.
  • Attend educational workshops and training sessions as required.
  • Perform other related duties as directed that correspond to the overall function of this position.
  • Ensure that the environmental management system conforms to the requirements of the International Standard.
  • Report on the performance of the environmental management system, including environmental performance, to top management.
  • 15. Authority to exercise and meet all the roles and responsibilities related to the Environment & Quality.
