Provide services as a Biologist (NHPs and Rabbits) in support of the overall functions of the Director of Intramural Research (DIR), TB Imaging Program (TBIP) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Duties and Responsibilities:Communicate results with the staff scientist and principal investigator as well as other collaborators.
Train and manage new personnel, schedule experiments and streamline tasks and distribution of responsibilities among team members so that all work gets completed in a timely fashion.
Provide critical care and intervention of an anesthetized patient, knowing when there is an issue and how to correct it.
Perform blood draws, catheter placement, intubation, injections, BALs, necropsies and other technical needs in NHPs and rabbits.
Process bloods and tissues according to specific needs of multiple experiments.
Plan and execute necropsies as well as train other staff to conduct necropsies.
Maintain accurate animal records and documentations associated with technical procedures of the animals.
Manipulate infectious and radioactive NHPs and rabbits in a safe and proficient manner.
Clearly communicate any changes in animals’ health status to facility veterinarian and appropriate team members.
Train staff to run/Use centrifuge, CBC machine, Chemistry machine, i-STAT, glucometer and other equipment and organize the results for manuscript preparation.
Act as study microbiologist to prepare MTB stocks for infecting animals.
Provide feedback on methods and technical procedures to improve upon, where applicable
Collect and organize data, perform data analysis and interpretation, and prepare technical reports; summaries, protocols, and inventories.
Interpret and evaluate the results of experiments. Work quickly and efficiently to generate high quality, reproducible data.
Prepare, write, and organize submission of animal protocols to ACUC and prepare amendments to protocols for submission on an ongoing basis to keep lab in compliance with ACUC rules.
Keep records and accounting of animals used for ACUC chairman for submission to USDA each year.
Basic Qualifications:BS degree or higher in scientific related field.
2 or more years of working experience in a lab setting.
Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
Highly proficient computer skills and excellent ability to learn new computer skills independently, occasional remote work with computer systems allowed, but in-person work in the ABSL-3 environment required.
Minimum Qualifications:Effective and clear communication skills and the ability to work in a high stress environment.
Must be able to pass extensive background check and Public Trust 5 clearance .
Good ability to understand and troubleshoot complex equipment .
Ability to work in a team under supervision in ABSL-3 laboratory environments following SOPs .
Ability to work independently on computers, software, and with imaging data to organize and create large datasets for analysis and conduct the analysis .
Willing to work flexible hours, rare weekend work possible .
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.
Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
