Feyen Zylstra is Hiring a Director of Sales and Operations Near Grand Rapids, MI

Feyen Zylstra is a team of hardworking doers and thinkers proud to use our brains and brawn to solve the complex problems associated with the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical and low voltage systems. We tend to work in industries like healthcare, industrial manufacturing, commercial, and data centers where our customers benefit most from our technical expertise and the experience we provide them.

We exist to have a positive impact on the lives of people. This starts with our FZers and a commitment to providing safe and energizing work environments, opportunities to learn and grow, and great pay and benefits. It then moves to our customers and a passion for helping them solve their most challenging problems. When we are successful in meeting the needs of our employees and our customers, we have the opportunity to have a positive impact well beyond ourselves in each of the communities where we live and work.

FZ is headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is focused on serving customers throughout Michigan, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.

FZ is looking for our next Director of Sales and Operations to lead, inspire, and grow our presence in Michigan. With branches in Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Kalamazoo, FZ has provided exceptional service to Michigan customers since our founding in 1980. Currently, our Michigan team stands strong at roughly 200 FZers including electricians, technicians, foreman, project managers, account managers, estimators, group leaders, and support staff. Poised for growth at an exciting time, this leader has the opportunity to help grow our presence in the region while building on our decades-long reputation.

About the Role:

Dependable and inspiring, our new West Michigan-based leader must possess strong initiative, a naturally collaborative approach, exceptional problem solving and analytical skills, and the ability to grow and lead a high performing team. This leader will have a keen sense of the external market and will pursue and develop deep relationships with current and potential customers.

The Michigan leader will report to the CEO and will be responsible for growth and development of the Michigan market including Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Kalamazoo. They will identify and pursue new business opportunities and relationships; set strategy to achieve short and long-term financial objectives; ensure alignment with companywide strategic and operational plans; and be committed to following FZ’s proven systems and processes.

What We’re Looking for:

  • A Relationship Builder. Whether it’s with a customer, supplier, vendor, or team member, you value the importance of relationships. You collaborate with others to resolve conflict. You treat others with respect. You appreciate differences.
  • A Leader. You understand that leadership is more than a job title. You lead by example. You are humble, sincere, and gracious. You believe in the role that coaching and feedback plays in the development of people and are committed to the success of others.
  • A Problem Solver. Your skills include prioritization, delegation, risk assessment, communication, and multi-tasking. When problems arise, things get off track, or an emergency presents itself, you roll up your sleeves to collaborate, direct, and get the job done.
  • A Communicator. You communicate effectively. You freely ask for and provide clear feedback. You are honest, direct, and trustworthy.
  • A Scorekeeper. You understand the importance of measuring progress and results, financial and otherwise. You provide clarity and take the complex and make it simple for those around you. You are accountable for accurate planning and forecasting. You connect strategies to outcome and results.
  • An Innovator. You always have an eye out for improvement. You are able to balance visionary thinking with initiative implementation and change. You push back on doing things how they’ve always been done and are open to new ideas.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic business plans to grow and improve the market share in Michigan. Responsible for the financial health for the region.
  • Direct the implementation and execution of FZ’s core operational processes in a manner that maximizes people and profitability.
  • Build and maintain strong and enduring strategic and tactical relationships with current and potential customers, partners, suppliers, vendors, and employees.
  • Model and cultivate a culture that reflects FZ’s Core Values: Safety, Professionalism, Integrity, Responsiveness, and Efficiency.

Key Qualifications:

  • 10-15 years of relevant experience within the general contracting, electrical, mechanical, or services industry with significant exposure to complex construction and industrial projects.
  • 5 years successfully managing a P&L.
  • Experience with full operational responsibility, including leading teams of people responsible for both sales and operations.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency that places a value on diversity and inclusion.

Leadership at FZ:

At FZ, we exist to have a positive impact on the lives of people. Our culture is core to doing this successfully, so we look to our leaders to model and live into this purpose as the central part of their role. We expect our leaders to have high emotional intelligence, strong communication skills, the ability to effectively manage and lead change, and the skills needed to deal directly with conflict in an emotionally healthy manner. Our leaders are focused team builders, effectively attracting, retaining, and developing the talent needed to successfully execute our strategies, systems, and processes.

FZ leaders understand the importance of consistent systems and processes in producing consistent results. They have a working knowledge of finance and understand how to influence the financial health of the business. They measure the results of their decisions and adjust as needed.

FZ offers an employee-focused total rewards package to attract and retain the best talent. If you join FZ, you are provided with highly competitive compensation including base salary, bonus potential based on individual, team, and company performance, and participation in long-term incentive program.

Our benefits package is best-in-class and offers high quality with low employee cost health insurance, wellness reimbursement, 401K program with company match, vacation, and more.
