Job Summary

Express Employment International is looking for an experienced Software Development Manager (Manager) to lead one or more software development teams. As a member of the management team, the Manager contributes to organizational strategic planning and decision making. The Manager should maintain a vision into the future in order to help plan the direction and use of technology. The primary focus is delivering quality products in a timely manner while cultivating individuals to grow their experience and expertise. Typical duties include leading and directing others while performing a variety of complicated tasks on a daily basis, assisting business analysts in writing requirements, engaging with support members to troubleshoot and resolve issues, grooming backlogs, participating in a limited amount of coding, participating in code reviews, documenting systems and processes, representing your team in project meetings and to senior management, and coordinating with other business teams.

Requirements

• Manage day-to-day activities of one or more software development teams to ensure each project remains on schedule
• Cultivate, grow, guide, and direct teams to set them on a path of success, not only at Express, but also in their careers
• Create, maintain, and track project requirements to properly estimate timelines, plans, and schedules to senior management
• Collaborate with other managers, architects, designers, direct reports, business analysts, and company leadership to collectively determine technical direction, system design, and implementation plan
• Provide routine status reports to internal and external customers
• Positively influence others to meet business goals
• Forward thinking individual that can anticipate both technical and business needs
• Must have a solid understanding of software design principles and patterns, where Domain Driven Design (DDD) and/or Behavior Driven Design (BDD) are desired
• Continuously monitor industry trends, technologies, and standards and be able to research, recommend, and apply new technologies as they emerge
• Education/Experience (must meet at least one of the following)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, from an accredited higher education facility
  • Formal education can be substituted by 8 years’ experience OR relevant certification in web development

Specialized Skill or Technical Knowledge

• Exhibits proficiency in an Agile/Scrum development methodology
• Proficient understanding of client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks, including jQuery
• Proficient understanding of ReactJS
• Proficient understanding of async request handling partial page updates, and AJAX
• Proficient understanding of Material UI design patterns
• Proficient understanding of UI/UX Design tools such as Balsamiq or Adobe XD
• Proficient understanding of REST APIs
• Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them.
• Expert level experience with software design including but not limited to
  • ASP.Net (C# preferred)
  • HTML5
  • CSS/LESS/SASS,
  • Javascript AJAX
  • Bootstrap
  • jQuery
  • Microsoft SQL/relational database design and development
  • Application and web server management
  • CI/CD processes and strategies
  • GIT/VSTS code versioning systems
  • Application development

Supervision Received/Given

Specific direction to accomplish priorities is received for both strategic direction and when needed for special or unusual situations. The Manager should plan and prioritize work for teams on a daily basis, groom backlog items for each iteration, and get clarification when needed.

Contacts Internal/External

Internal Contacts are normally made with limited or no supervision and concern matters that require explanation, discussion, and interpretation. Generally, matters requiring approval will be supervised. External Contacts are made with limited or no supervision and concern matters that require explanation, discussion, and interpretation.

Confidential Information

The position has access to most all proprietary business systems to understand how the processes work and are protected by password or role-based access. Access to information is given under appropriate approval, and absolute discretion is critical for most instances.

Due to the dynamic nature of our business there are constant needs for assignments that were neither foreseen nor expected. This may be the need to evaluate or implement a new technology or simply to handle a challenge encountered by a customer.

The relatively small number of developers on staff necessitates that this position be more dynamic than perhaps an employee of the same title at other companies. While leading one or more teams is the focus of this role there will be instances when this role may need to perform duties such as coding, requirements gathering, estimation, project management, and troubleshooting production issues.

Constant education, both self-directed and classroom, is required in order to keep up with changing technology, tools, languages, and business systems.
