Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, and with direction from the Grounds Lead person, the position performs skilled work in the maintenance and care of campus grounds, landscapes, and nurseries/greenhouses. Knowledge of maintenance and cultivation practices for trees, lawns, and ornamental plants, such as soil testing, pruning, transplanting and applying chemicals is required.
Typical Duties:
  • Prepare soil for planting seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees, and shrubs;
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment, including power equipment;
  • Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge, aerate and maintain lawns;
  • Install, repair and operate irrigation systems;
  • Transplant seedlings, trees and shrubs and other nursery stock;
  • Rake and remove leaves; pull, hoe, and control weeds;
  • Prune, spray and fertilize trees, shrubs and ground covers;
  • Remove debris, refuse, leaves, brush, snow, and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps and parking lots; apply ice melter, sand and gravel;
  • Install and maintain campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc.;
  • Read and interpret blueprints for projects;
  • Competently and safely use a variety of manual tools and equipment including, but not limited to rakes, pruning shears, hand edgers, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows and pesticide sprayers;
  • Operate power and motorized equipment including, but not limited to weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers in a safe, competent and accurate manner;
  • Apply pesticides and herbicides to greenery and plant material;
  • May direct the work of student employees;
  • Respond to trouble calls pertaining to grounds and related matters;
  • Perform assigned/requested tasks in a timely and workmanlike manner;
  • Maintain positive working relationships and coordinate projects effectively with other facilities personnel and college staff/faculty;
  • Enforce and follow safety regulations at all times and maintain safety precautions, including PPE, as appropriate;
  • Dress appropriately for working outdoors under various weather conditions;
  • Plan equipment downtime for maintenance procedures;
  • Maintain appropriate inventory for emergency repairs and regular maintenance;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher qualification
  • One or more years of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience.
  • Knowledge of the common scientific names of typical landscape plants and their uses
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, equipment and safety precautions of the grounds maintenance trade
  • Ability to estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain within 6 months, a Washington State permit to apply pesticides
  • Valid drivers license, and ability to successfully pass a driving records check
