Controller for DSJ
Job Description:The Controller is a pivotal financial position within the organization, responsible for overseeing the entirety of the company's accounting and financial operations. In the absence of an internal accounting team, the Controller plays a dual role: ensuring meticulous management of financial records and providing actionable financial insights to drive business decisions. This role serves as the linchpin between daily financial activities and the broader financial strategy provided by a CFO.
Salary: $100,000-$120,000
Responsibilities:
  • Month-End Close Process:
    • Assist in the month-end close process, ensuring all financial data is accurately captured and reported
    • Record various journal entries, including accruals, adjustments, and other necessary entries to reflect the company's financial position accurately
    • Prepare financial statements for accuracy and completeness, identifying any discrepancies or areas of concern and discussion
    • Offer well-thought-out suggestions for improving the month-end close process, ensuring efficiency and accuracy
  • Day-to-Day Accounting Operations:
    • Oversee and manage the daily accounting activities, ensuring all transactions are recorded timely and accurately
    • Monitor and review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness
    • Process payroll on semi monthly basis using third party administrator.
    • Assist with HR related tasks as needed (i.e. onboarding of new employees)
  • Account Reconciliations:
    • Perform and review monthly reconciliations for key accounts, including:
      • Cash reconciliation: Ensure all cash transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled against bank statements and CCH Axcess Practice
      • Revenue Reconciliation: Reconcile revenue from CCH and third party software/POS to accounting software ensuring sales are captured accurately
      • Accounts Receivable reconciliation: Review and reconcile any discrepancies General Ledger vs. CCH
      • Accounts Payable reconciliation: Ensure all outstanding bills are accounted for and reconciled against payments made
      • All other relevant balance sheet and expense accounts that require a monthly reconciliation.
  • Tax and Regulatory Compliance
    • Responsible for assisting in the preparation of the income tax returns
  • Budget and Forecast:
    • Work with Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to develop annual budget
    • Responsible for maintaining budget vs. actual schedule on monthly basis
    • Prepare and update cash flow projections, analyzing incoming and outgoing funds
    • Monitor cash balances and forecast future cash needs to ensure the company maintains adequate liquidity
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Formulate the company’s future financial direction and support tactical initiatives
    • Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans
  • Management:
    • Manage the accounting staff, setting goals, conducting performance reviews, and overseeing professional development
    • Ensure adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements
  • Stakeholder Communication:
    • Communicate financial metrics and insights to senior management
    • Provide information to assist in both long-term and short-term decision making
  • Ad Hoc Reporting:
    • Generate custom financial reports as requested by Executive Committee
    • Analyze financial data and provide insights and recommendations based on findings
  • Close Process Assistance:
    • Handle and assist in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring all financial statements are prepared in compliance with accounting standards and regulations
    • Collaborate with other departments to gather necessary data and documentation for financial reporting
    • Review and approve financial statements and reports, ensuring they reflect the company's financial position accurately
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or MBA is preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of proven experience as a Controller or similar role
  • Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks Online, Excel, and familiarity with other accounting software and relevant software as needed, such as ADP Database and CCH Software
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial regulations
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze financial data and provide insights for decision-making
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to a non-financial audience
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and mentor a team, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in all financial operations
