DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING
Reports To: VP, Product & Engineering
Location: DoSomething.org is headquartered in New York City with a distributed workforce across the country. Preferably, candidates will be based in the New York City Metro area or the East Coast, but candidates in other locations within the U.S will be considered.
Tri-state area employees have the flexibility of a hybrid office environment (3 days in office, TU/W/TH, with flexible working hours).
Compensation: $100,800K - $113,400K

THE ROLE
The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading DoSomething's engineering team, currently composed of five engineers, in building the next generation of our technologies.
The Director of Engineering will be charged with aligning vision to capacity, ensuring Engineering capacity and Agile workflow is moving forward efficiently and on target, and sourcing and aligning our supporting external technical vendors and stack-focused SAAS providers. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for shepherding alignment for our next-generation data policies, and for supporting Development and Operations to craft tech-focused grants.
The Director of Engineering will also stand up to create strong relationships with Directors across the organization, including with the Product, Programming, Insights and Communications & Marketing teams.
We have a distributed team; preference for New York City or East-coast-based individuals.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Engineering Leadership & Team Management - 40%

• Lead the Engineering team! This talented team is seeking someone who will listen and lead, drive aggressive, yet achievable timelines, and someone to help their hard work achieve visibility across the organization. Grow, manage, and develop both full time and contracted engineers. The Engineering budget is approximately $1M.
• Deliver needed high-level engineering decisions with clear rationale, soliciting input from Engineering, and often in consultation with Product and other teams.
• Shepherd the organizational work to build and maintain a right-sized approach to data governance and security, working collaboratively and regularly with Insights, Marketing and Operations stakeholders.
• Participate, and lead, cross-functional team meetings, and collaborate closely and regularly with Directors of Product, Program, Insights, Marketing and Communications.
• Cultivate a workforce that reflects the communities we serve and advocate for continuous growth and development.

Engineering Visioning - 20%

• Lead the Engineering vision,and lead stack/architectural decisions with input from Engineers.
• Break the mold by encouraging and supporting experimentation across a wide variety of platforms and spaces to externalize DoSomething's member experience and reach a diversity of young people. Ensure experimentation is a part of team culture.

Project & Process Management - 40%

• Develop a short, medium, and long-term Engineering roadmap for our key properties and supporting infrastructure. Partner with the Product and Engineering teams to utilize their critical input. Lead the technical roadmap and implementation timeline.
• Competitively source vendors and contract negotiations ensure mutually agreed-upon terms and conditions, nonprofit-aligned bids.
• Lead vendor and technology partner conversations that conform technical requirements and possibly product requirements, generated in partnership with Product & Engineering teams.
• Advocate for, and support clear Agile processes; work closely with Product stakeholders through the SDLC, including during discovery and design, estimation, implementation, QA and release.
• Lead and model an inclusive engineering culture, including through collaborative documentation, code pairing, peer PR reviews and other practices you might bring.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• You have 7 years of experience with hands-on software development and architecture, including within a modern Agile teaming environment.
• You have managed Engineering teams and worked in close collaboration with Product teams to bring ideas to fruition.
• You have sourced and vetted contracts and contractors; you're familiar with the contracting process.
• Certification in CSM or other PM certification is desired; you have experience with Agile scrum.
• Knowledge and experience utilizing AWS, including EKS, S3 and communications architectures (SQS, etc) is helpful.
• You have strong communication skills for a variety of audiences, settings, and formats (e.g.; verbal - lead or attendee for internal/external meetings; written - email, Slack, and internal/external documents).
• You are comfortable speaking in front of internal and external audiences.
• Familiarity with data models, database design, and segmentation techniques is preferred.

• DoSomething will retain candidate profiles for 3 years.
• Annually on August 1, candidate profiles from 3 years prior will be entirely deleted from our system.

Is your data secure?

• JazzHR maintains secure job board pages. Job boards will default to HTTPS. Additionally, if we were to terminate our contract with JazzHR our candidate data is deleted from JazzHR's systems in accordance with JazzHR's Terms of Service.
