Job Summary
This position is located in the District of Columbia Government, Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS), Fleet Maintenance Division, Apparatus Unit.
The mission of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Service Department is to preserve life and promote health and safety through excellent pre-hospital treatment and transportation, fire prevention, fire suppression and rescue activities and homeland security awareness.
Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Leaders who are engaged in monitoring the progress of repairs and preventative maintenance, in addition to inspecting completed scheduled and unscheduled maintenance / repairs for quality and completion.
This includes all the heavy-duty mobile firefighting equipment, ambulances, trucks, automobiles, and vehicle equipment for the FEMS’s fleet.
Collaborates with management and non-management to assess training needs to develop goals and objectives for operation-specific areas.
Maintains records through the fleet Fire Management Information System (FMIS), provides reports and reviews data on shop floor efficiency.
Recommends new methods and procedures as developed by the auto and heavy-duty industries. Ensures that during inspection of quality and completion of repairs the appropriate parts are utilized for repair as outlined by management of the Apparatus Division.
Implements improvement of operational performance by identifying, correcting, and reducing comeback or repetitive repairs.
Implements improvement of operational performance by reducing the technician labor hours directed to each repair trough education and enhancement of mechanics skills and abilities.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair
Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
Use of measuring instruments
Ability to interpret instructions, specification
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
Trouble shooting
License and Certification
The incumbent must possess a valid motor vehicle license.
The incumbent must have a working knowledge of the preventative maintenance requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA 1911.
2012 edition, or any subsequent edition; must obtain and keep current organizational and manufacturing training in accordance with National Fire Protection Association, NFPA 1071.
2016 edition, or any subsequent edition.
This position will be assigned the duties of EVT III and shall meet all the requirements to be able to perform inspections, maintenance, repairs, diagnoses, and performance testing duties, as required by NFPA 1071, 2016 edition or any subsequent edition.
Working Condition / Environment
Work time will be spent both indoors and outdoors where there is potential for exposure to exhaust smoke, debris, grease, oil, noise vibrations, bacteria, and viruses.
The incumbent is required to use safety equipment, protective clothing, etc.

Collective Bargaining Unit : This position is not covered under the collective bargaining agreement.
Position Designation : This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable).
This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
Residency Preference : Applicants claiming Residency Preference will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years.
Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
