Job Summary
This position is located in the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), Division of Health and Wellness.
The mission of the OSSE is to set high standards, build educator and system capacity to meet those standards, expand educational opportunities for all learners with a focus on those underserved and hold everyone - including ourselves - accountable for results.

The division leverages programming, partnerships, policy, and data to remove health barriers to learning so that people of all ages and backgrounds are prepared to succeed in school and in life.
The position serves as a Health and Physical Education Specialist responsible for supporting the implementation of the health, physical education, and physical activity aspects of the District of Columbia Healthy Schools Act of 2010.
Duties and Responsibilities
Implements the division's strategy for health education, physical education, and physical activity. Manages and evaluates the Health and Physical Education Leadership Cadre program.
Promotes partnerships that support healthy and sustainable environments in schools.
Serves as the liaison for the Physical Activity Subcommittee of the Healthy Youth and Schools Commission. Coordinates the subcommittee meeting schedule, drafts meeting agendas, and supports the Commissioner and subcommittee members with interim action items.
Liaises with key governmental and non-governmental partners including, DC Department of Health, DC Department of Behavioral Health, DC Public Schools, DC Public Charter School Board.
Qualifications and Education
Degree : Health education, Health Management, Education, Sociology, Community Development, Social Work, or Educational Psychology. And
Specialized Experience : Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (CS-11) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

The work is performed in a typical office setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions.

Duration of Appointment : This is an Education Service (ES), At-Will Appointment. All positions and appointments in the Education Service serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union) : This position is not covered under a collecting bargaining agreement.
Position Designation : In accordance with Chapter 4 of the personnel regulations, Suitability, this position has been deemed Protection- Sensitive .
Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to pre-employment checks (criminal background checks, consumer credit check, traffic record checks, and drug screenings, if applicable) as a condition of employment, and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of your tenure.
Emergency Designation : This position is designated as emergency and you are agreeing to adhere to the policies in sections 1271 and 1274 of DPM Chapter 12, regarding Essential / Emergency employees.
As an emergency employee, you will be required to either report to work, stay at work, or telework (if directed to do so) during a declared emergency or during a period of non-emergency where your duties have been deemed as critical District government functions / operations.
You may be required to perform other duties outside of your position description during a period of a declared emergency (such as manual labor, shelter services, etc.).
Residency Preference : Applicants claiming Residency Preference will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years.
Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
