Job Description

Crum & Forster is seeking a dynamic, market-influencing underwriter to join our growing Inland Marine team. We are looking for a senior/executive underwriter who has a proven track record in developing strong relationships in the builders’ risk space, on both a ground-up and quota share basis. Our ideal candidate should have a passion for builder’s risk underwriting, a can-do attitude and not be afraid to roll up their sleeves to achieve our goals. We are expanding across the US and looking for experienced underwriters with strong national builders’ risk relationships to help us build our US footprint.

Senior/Executive Underwriter Inland Marine

Primary Location: Remote with national relationships

Function: Responsible for review and analysis of underwriting data in order to determine risk eligibility to corporate standards. Develop and manage agency relationships through excellent customer service and creative marketing activities. Seen as a technical underwriting expert within the organization and throughout their assigned agency plant and territory.

What you will do:

  • Provide subject matter expertise on inland marine insurance within the organization.
  • Meet profitability and written premium goals determined by the department.
  • Make independent decisions within underwriting letter of authority and maintain proper file documentation.
  • Assist in developing annual business goals for assigned brokers. Responsible for analyzing results and maintaining accountability of broker partners within the department.
  • Possess and develop a keen awareness of market trends and identify emerging threats to the department.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of department products and services.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the department’s value proposition.
  • Participate in training and initiatives. May participate in projects.
  • Travel required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What YOU will bring to C&F:

  • A minimum of seven years’ experience underwriting inland marine business including builder’s risk.
  • Existing relationships with regional and national brokers, agents and producers with a focus on construction and other Inland Marine business.
  • Manuscript, Company and AAIS Inland Marine form experience.
  • Strong communication, analytical and negotiation skills.
  • Travel for marketing and/or training purposes, including attendance at national industry events.
  • Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
  • Must be able to work well in a small, tightly knit team environment, but also be able to work independently within an assigned underwriting authority document, territory and appetite.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft software applications.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, CRIS, AMIM, or CPCU preferred.
  • Will abide by departmental policies and procedures, including authority levels, to comply with C&F's risk management controls.

Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $86,600 to a maximum of $197,100. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
