Position Title: Custodian – Part-Time

Position Characteristics: Non-seasonal, 20 hours per week, no benefits. 

Weekdays, evenings, late nights, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays.

Department: Visual Maintenance 

Reporting Relationships:

Position Reports To: Custodial Supervisor, Full-Time Custodian

Positions Directly Supervised: None

Position Purpose:

Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the Service Area building, equipment, fixtures, and furnishings. Perform routine maintenance including vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping floors; dusting, washing walls, doors, and windows, and emptying trash. Perform minor preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Assist service personnel as needed. Report major repair and maintenance needs. 

Nature and Scope:

This position requires knowledge of basic cleaning techniques and the ability to follow instructions quickly and correctly. Attention to detail is also vital to the successful execution of this position and to ensure that building appearance and sanitation are appropriately maintained. Assist with snow removal. 

Essential Functions and Basic Duties:

1. Assume responsibility for the effective performance of assigned cleaning and maintenance functions.
2. Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors.
3. Wash and dust walls, tables, doors, light fixtures, vending machines, and windows.
4. Clean and disinfect toilets, urinals, showers, tile floors, and other fixtures.
5. Fill soap, toilet paper, and towel dispensers regularly.
6. Empty trash containers as needed. Maintain waste receptacles in a clean and pleasant manner.
7. Pick-up litter (inside and outside) as necessary.
8. Complete snow removal.
9. Set up rooms, etc. for meetings.

1. Assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with Service Area personnel, management, vendors, and service providers.
2. Assist Service Area personnel and outside service providers as needed.
3. Keep management informed of area activities, any significant problems, and maintenance concerns.
4. Attend and participate in meetings as required. Complete required paperwork.

1. Assume responsibility for maintaining courteous, effective relations with patrons and members of the public.
2. Assume responsibility for other duties as assigned.
3. Performs miscellaneous cleaning and specially requested tasks as assigned. 

Performance Measurements:

1. Building facilities and equipment are clean, neat, and well-maintained.
2. Cleaning and maintenance functions are safely and timely completed in accordance with established standards and procedures.
3. Maintenance needs and problems are promptly identified and resolved or reported. 
4. Maintenance functions are well-coordinated with other Service Area functions. Assistance is provided to other personnel as needed.
5. Management is appropriately informed of area activities.
6. Effective, courteous relations exist with patrons, visitors, vendors, and members of the public. 

Qualifications:

Training/Education/Certification:

• Approved Criminal Background Investigation check if over 18 years of age.

Required Knowledge:

• Knowledge of basic cleaning techniques and maintenance procedures.
• Understanding of related safety and OSHA requirements. 

Experience Required:

• Previous cleaning/janitorial experience helpful.

Skills/Abilities:

• Attentive to detail.
• Able to follow directions and work well independently.
• Ability to work weekends and evenings.
• Able to use basic cleaning tools (including vacuums, carpet scrubbers, mops, brooms, etc.)

Physical Activities and Requirements of this Position:

Stooping: Bending downward and forward at the waist. Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.

Kneeling: Resting on knee or knees.

Crouching: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.

Crawling: Moving on hands and knees or hands and feet. 

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing: For extended time periods.

Walking: Especially for short distances.

Pulling: Using upper body to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects. 

Lifting: Occurs frequently and requires substantial use of upper body and back muscles.

Talking: Especially when one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.

Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

Seeing: Average, ordinary, vision acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery. 

Physical Strength: Medium work, exerts up to 50 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and 10 lbs. constantly. 

Working Conditions:

• Worker subject to changing inside temperature, such as freezers.
• Must work in extreme cold for more than an hour. Temperatures below 32 degrees.
• Must work in very noisy environment requiring workers to shout to communicate.
• Frequent local travel. 

Mental Activities and Requirements of this Position:

General Education-Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, involved instructions and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables.

General Education-Mathematics Ability: Ability to perform very basic math skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing two digit numbers; to perform the four basic arithmetic operations with coins as part of a dollar; to perform operations with units such as inch, foot, and yard; ounce and pound (or their metric counterparts).

General Education-Language Ability: Ability to recognize the meaning of 2,500 (2 and 3 syllable) words; to read (by sight or Braille) at a very slow rate; to compare similarities and difference between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and communicate in simple sentences.
