Technical Director - The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare on the Common 2024

FLSA Status: Temporary; Full-Time; Non-Exempt employment on a W2

Location: Boston, MA

  • Prep prior to load in to be completed remotely with occasional in-person meetings
  • Occasional storage runs to our storage facilities in Canton, MA will be required
  • Occasional visits to third-party scene shop will be required
  • The performance itself takes place on the Boston Common near the Parkman Bandstand

Compensation: $25.00per hour, with any hours over 40 in a given week payable at an overtime rate of $37.50 per hour. Anticipated total hours for the project are 337, which includes 120 hours of preparation time. Payments will be made in the week following completion of work, typically on Thursdays.

Candidates must be located within commuting distance of the Boston Common as housing is not provided.

Engagement Dates: May 1-August 16, 2024

  • Load In: July 1-9
  • First Preview: July 16
  • Press Opening: July 24

  • Common Stage: August 6-10
  • Load Out: August 12-16

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Scenic Design
  • Oversee scenic bid process in conjunction with Production Management
  • Collaborate with scenic designer and scene shop to complete the build on time and on budget
  • Supervising and Hiring of Staff
  • Secure and supervise overhire labor for load in and load out as needed
  • Indirectly supervise PAs during load in and load out
  • Review/sign off on timesheets as needed
  • Budgeting
  • Maintain/manage the Scenic Budget as outlined by Director of Production
  • Ensure all expenses are tracked and accounted for in coordination with the scene shop
  • Load In/Load Out
  • Work with other department heads and vendors to install the CSC-owned Steeldeck, truss, and related equipment. Oversee scenic install with third-party scene shop and CSC staff
  • Work with other department heads and vendors to complete load out/strike of the space, which may include operating a rented cargo van or box truck to complete storage returns
  • Maintain safe working environment according to OSHA and general standards
  • Technical Rehearsals
  • Communicate with Production Management to address notes from previous day’s production meetings; complete minor repairs and scenic notes on site

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • On-site job requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
  • Ability to navigate stairs and uneven terrain
  • Ability to navigate in low-light, outdoor settings
  • Valid driver’s license
  • 18 years of age
  • Experience with and ability to meet all duties and responsibilities as listed above
  • Desired qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in theatre
  • 3 years experience in Technical Direction or a related field
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience in managing large crews
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with outdoor theatre a plus
  • Personal vehicle a plus
