Collegiate School is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near New York, NY

General Summary :

Under the general direction of the Controller, the Senior Accountant provides support to the School's business and finance operations ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the accounting and reporting systems while providing excellent customer service to all constituencies.

Essential Duties:

General Ledger

  • Prepare and input journal entries for standard, recurring and accrual entries;
  • Review, approve and post journal entries in collaboration with Business Office colleagues;
  • Ensure that all general ledger postings including but not limited to payroll, cash receipts and accounts receivable entries are properly recorded to the general ledger on a timely basis;
  • Support completion of processes for month end close schedule;
  • Perform reconciliations of balance sheet accounts including interfund;

Cash Management

  • Monitor and reconcile multiple bank and credit card accounts;
  • Prepare and/or review monthly bank reconciliations in collaboration with Business Office colleagues ensuring that all bank reconciliations are completed in a timely manner;
  • Reconcile contributions and pledge payments to bank and general ledger for Annual Fund, Restricted and Endowment Fund gifts recorded by the Development Department; and
  • Coordinate stop payments, wire transfers, debit blocks, account discrepancies, new account set up, etc. with banks.

Accounts Receivable

  • Reconcile ACH tuition payments from online system to student accounts, bank and GL;
  • Analyze student tuition, financial aid, fees, etc. and reconcile to general ledger accounts and other reports as needed;
  • Work with Office of Admissions to record and reconcile enrollment agreements and related deposit payments; and

Accounting Functions

  • Perform GL and related information research, respond to inquiries and provide data to appropriate departmental personnel and program counterparts as assigned;
  • Provide support and training to Business Office staff regarding account analysis and reconciliations;
  • Perform research, reconciliations and other general and specific tasks as requested and necessary to meet department reporting deadlines;
  • Participate in cross-training initiatives within the department. Act as backup for other functions such as student billing, accounts payable and payroll operations as required.
  • Assist in preparation of schedules and reconciliations for the annual financial audit and retirement plan audit;
  • Serves as a source of information to faculty, staff, and external contacts on established finance policies and procedures;
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date policies and procedures for the accounting functions in conjunction with the Controller;
  • Performs routine and non-routine data retrieval, research, analysis, and reporting from financial records as requested;
  • Assists the CFOO, Controller, and Director of Human Resources in carrying out the goals and objectives of the Business Office; and
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or related field; and 5-7 years of accounting experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to complete a background check.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • As a key member of the Business Office team, this position requires exacting attention to detail, the ability to adhere to deadlines, strong analytical skills and the integrity to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information.
  • A commitment to timely and accurate project completion is expected as the position is a representative of the department to many internal and external constituencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office especially Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software systems - familiarity with Blackbaud FENXT is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to participate fully in a dynamic day school located in New York City.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow all policies and procedures of the School as written in the employee and parent handbooks.

About Collegiate School

Collegiate School, a day school for boys, is the oldest independent school in the United States. Tracing its origins to 1628, the school was established by the Dutch West India Company and the Classis of Amsterdam, the parent ecclesiastical body of the Dutch Reformed Church for the colonists of New Amsterdam. Beginning with Adam Roelantsen, twenty-eight headmasters have guided Collegiate "so that first of all in so wild a country, the youth be well taught and brought up." As New York City expanded to the north, the school moved from its original quarters on the southern tip of Manhattan Island... to a number of different locations. In 1892 it settled at a site next to the West End Collegiate Church, where Collegiate took on its modern form as an all boys' school and continued to develop its college preparatory program. In 2018, the school moved from the site at 260 West 78th Street to its new home at 301 Freedom Place South. Incorporated in 1940 as a non-profit organization under the Education Act of the State of New York, Collegiate School is no longer a church-directed institution, but the school maintains its historic association with the Collegiate Churches.
