Description

This Department Manager position oversees the Deli and Kitchen areas, Bakery, Cheese Station, Pizza Station and Barista Station. The role has specific on-going, day-to-day responsibility for sales floor and merchandising operations, to include merchandising standards, display compliance, signing and pricing, receiving operations, powered equipment training, inventory and shrink controls, and vendor management. The Department Manager will work in partnership with the Store Director, Senior Assistant Store Director and/or Assistant Store Director to ensure all areas of responsibility and operations are maintained.

General Key Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  • Demonstrates understanding of store priorities and can anticipate changes
    • Shows initiative in problem solving.
    • Can readily adjust to changing conditions.
    • Keeps Store management informed as to general department conditions and decisions made.
    • Conducts departmental meetings and encourages contributions to the decision-making process of the department.
    • Develops and maintains communications with other departments in order to devise marketing plans, which will help meet the financial objectives of the store. Keeps Store management fully informed of these actions.
  • Oversee Shelf Management
    • Seeks consumer and company feedback about product sets.
    • Minimizes lost sales by coordinating with Store management to monitor on-shelf availability and to cover shortages with strategic placement or alternatives.
    • Ensures shelf changes are completed on time, including sign packages.
    • Understand and apply loss prevention practices to minimize losses and to ensure safe shopping and working conditions.
  • Pricing
    • Work effectively with both Scan Coordinators and Clark’s Pricing Coordinator teams to maintain accurate pricing and timely changes.
    • Ensure that signs are ordered and printed, and shelf tags and labeling materials are correctly placed per sales programs.
  • Department Operational Standards
  • Adheres to store standards and monitors for departmental compliance daily.
  • Ensures displays are built following department standards.
  • Ensure that food safety and general safe practices are followed, and department staff know proper processes and guidelines, continually be checking for compliance, and coach employees when actions or behaviors are unsafe.
  • Controls department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, by controlling labor costs and by reducing losses due to shrinkage and pilferage.
  • Insures compliance with local, state and government weights and measures laws.
  • Merchandising
  • Develops and implements localized merchandising plan for the department, sets up and creates displays for new and seasonal items as well as items that are tied-in with other department promotions, in order to meet the sales and profit objectives of the store and the department.
  • Implements seasonally relevant merchandising in all departments and specific seasonal changeovers.
  • Inventory and Order Management
    • Assume primary responsibility for product availability, proper rotation, quality, freshness of perishables and correct pricing.
    • Checks for "holes" in aisle or shelf stocking and maintenance of displays and resolves shelf shortages.
    • Manages department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports and orders product and supplies so as to meet customer requirements and the company’s gross profit goals.
  • Oversees timely and accurate departmental ordering practices and procedures.
  • Follows established departmental procedures for receiving merchandise including inspecting the product when delivered, pricing the product and restocking cases to insure freshness and quality, accuracy and product rotation.
  • Properly address and account for product recalls.
  • World class customer experience
    • Monitor and coach customer service standards in all departmental positions.
    • Identifies areas in the Department where improvement in customer service is required, then implement changes and procedures to address these needs.
  • Food safety
    • Monitors and tracks all Food Safety certifications.
    • Coordinates with internal food safety communications and practices to comply with and improve departmental food safety.
    • Verifies all food safety posters and signage are posted appropriately.
    • Ensure production logs, order guides, temp check logs and date labels are reviewed/recorded daily.
    • Maintains effective housekeeping program. Keeps merchandise clean and fresh so as to meet all health department regulations, pass sanitation inspections and meet company standards.
    • Ensures that associates work and operate equipment in a safe manner at all times, complying with OSHA requirements.
    • Monitor issue and use of personal protective equipment and food safety equipment and practices.
  • Effective Use of Technology
    • Understand store systems and processes to ensure effective and appropriate use, including but not limited to: ordering, receiving, credits, point-of-sale, shelf space/inventory management and shrink management.
  • Staffing and Employee Support
  • Schedules all department employees, oversees and delegates their work assignments so as to most effectively utilize their talents and abilities while maximizing profits for the department.
  • Assists with the department staff training needs and effectively use rewards and recognize to incent performance while also maximizing profits for the department.
  • Maintains accurate records on all important matters, including associate performance and discipline, conduct, compliance etc.

  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Position requires ability to encourage individual and group effort toward defined goals and to provide training, development, and work direction in a supportive and consistent manner.

Qualifications:

  • Current Food Safety Management Certification.
  • 3 years of retail grocery Food Service area departmental management experience.
  • Proven managerial skills to successfully monitor performance and accountability.
  • Possess strong leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Resourceful with ability to work across all areas of the business.
  • Ability to demonstrate financial acumen in the retail grocery industry.
  • Expertise in use of retail store technologies.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule.
