Description

JOB SUMMARY

CityTeam is looking for a financial professional who can immediately contribute to our Accounting and Finance Team. Under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, this position performs a variety of professional accounting and financial duties for a large multi-state nonprofit organization. The position applies advanced principles of accounting and financial analysis in order to oversee all accounting and finance functions. Directly responsible for non-profit financial reporting, adherence with policies and procedures, payroll processing and compliance, accounts payable, debt compliance, sales & use tax compliance, property tax, restricted fund accounting, gift-in-kind valuation, allocations of functional expenses, budgeting, financial and variance analysis, and other duties as required. The Controller manages the entire accounting/finance department including assignments for staff. Working behind the scenes at CityTeam is a calling, not just a job. The Controller will ensure good stewardship and protect the financial integrity of CityTeam. Our ideal candidate will provide excellent customer service, handle conflict in a Christ-like manner, be capable of juggling multiple tasks, and have a servant’s heart.

The Controller is a 40-hour per week position, working at the organization’s headquarters in San Jose.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate existing procedures and make recommendations for reducing time and cost of operations.
  • Evaluate needs and direct staffing effort to provide complete accounting and financial services for the organization.
  • Supervise professional, technical, and clerical personnel in the performance of such duties as processing payroll, fixed assets, accounts payable, miscellaneous billing, general ledger functions and reconciliations, restricted fund accounting, gift-in-kind reporting and valuation, grant reporting, bank reconciliations, donation processing and other financial functions.
  • Review and approve payroll, accounts payable, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements prepared by staff. 
  • Oversee complete month-end and year-end accounting close process on a timely basis.
  • Oversee the retirement plan to ensure compliance with company policy and plan documents.
  • Develop, analyze, and interpret statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
  • Configure and maintain accounting software platforms. Evaluate existing and new software and lead ERP implementations when required.
  • Oversee the preparation of financial statements including Statements of Activities, Financial Position, Functional Expenses, and Cash Flows, and dashboards along with complete financial reporting package.
  • Provide excellent customer service to staff and respond to inquiries timely.
  • Train program directors/ managers in budget development for their departments and assist them in understanding their financial statements.
  • Oversee preparation of annual operating budgets and financial analysis for the Executive Directors and program staff including revenue analysis.
  • Analyze actual to budget variances on a monthly basis and assist in resolving and/or explaining the variances as well as variance analysis on individual accounts.
  • Make presentations to staff and Board of Trustees as necessary.
  • Manage timely annual external audits and form 990 tax return preparation, including government compliance audit when required.
  • Communicate regularly with direct reports; ensure that direct reports are performing their job responsibilities efficiently and effectively; prepare annual staff evaluations for direct reports. 
  • Recommend training to keep the staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet the organization’s needs and objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Excellent supervisory, communication, presentation, and report development skills.
  • Advanced analytical skills required to assist in the development and maintenance of accounting and finance related tasks.
  • Advanced knowledge of general ledger accounting, budgeting and financial analysis techniques.
  • Ability to effectively give financial presentations and training to Executive Directors, program managers and/or supervisors, and other staff.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of information systems including automated accounting, budgeting, payroll, and financial systems and spreadsheet applications in order to facilitate the needs of the organization. Ability to effectively evaluate and manage the implementation of new systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and multi-state regulations, accounting principles, FASB, internal controls, cost management techniques
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to complete tasks by deadlines.
  • Utmost attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Enthusiasm to learn and work as a part of a team.
  • Must be able to maintain confidential information and exhibit a high level of professional integrity, meet professional standards and exercise good judgment at all times.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field. Accounting degree preferred.
  • CPA or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum seven years of progressively responsible related accounting experience with at least three years of supervisory and management experience.
  • Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced MS Excel skills
