FIREFIGHTER I
JOB INFORMATION:

The Firefighter I is classified as an exempt regular, full-time Employee as defined by the City of Susanville's
Employee Manual. The Firefighter I is part of the Fire Department and is represented by the Operating
Engineers Local Union No. 3 Firefighter Bargaining Unit and is compensated at Range 129-131 of the Unit's
salary matrix.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the shift supervisor the Firefighter I fights fire and participates in fire prevention
activities in protecting life and property; operates and maintains firefighting and rescue equipment, and
fire stations; and does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responds to fire, rescue, medical and other emergency incidents;

Lays supply and suppression hose lines and operates nozzle to direct stream of water on fire;

Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders;

Performs overhaul and salvage operations;

Operates rescue and EMS equipment;

Operates radio, telephone, and computer equipment;

Administers first aid;

Cleans and assists in testing of fire hoses and pumping apparatus;

Answers general questions from the public and assists in other community projects;

Cleans station quarters and equipment and maintains a clean and orderly condition in and about the fire
house;

Studies Fire Department rules and regulations, public education and prevention practices, and firefighting
techniques;

Participates in fire drills and training exercises;

Assists in fire prevention inspections;

May be required to respond to emergency calls during non-duty hours;

Serves as Acting Fire Apparatus Engineer as assigned;

Performs preliminary fire cause investigations;

Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of firefighting experience as a volunteer or one year experience in a full-time
department.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
MINIMUM REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of an appropriate California Class B operator's license issued by the State Department
of Motor Vehicles or ability to obtain within first year.
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or ability to obtain within first month
  • Equivalent to completion of California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter I certificate or ability to
obtain within first year.
  • EMT B or Emergency Medical Responder Certificate or ability to obtain within first year
  • ICS 100, 200
  • Hazmat FRO
  • NIMS 700
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE OF OR ABILITY TO:
• First aid.
  • Street system, the physical layout of the city, and the location of fire hydrants.
  • Firefighting methods and techniques.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department and other city employees
and the general public.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly and correctly.
  • Operate fire equipment and apparatus.
  • Write clear, concise, and accurate reports.
