City of Pueblo is Hiring a Seasonal Parks Worker Near Pueblo, CO

This is a non-exempt, seasonal position limited to 1,300 hours annually. Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, Park Area Crew Leader, Pool Maintenance Mechanics, or Parks Caretakers, assists the full-time Parks Caretakers by working completely independently or leading a crew of other seasonal employees in performing unskilled to semi-skilled work in a variety of fields in the maintenance and upkeep of the public parks, grounds, buildings, athletic fields, pools, and related facilities. Cuts grass, maintains ball fields, maintains pools, loads and unloads dirt, gravel, trash and other debris including the collection and disposal of refuse at the park areas. Duties also may include operating vehicles and equipment in either a specific or a variety of maintenance, construction and/or utility tasks.
  • Performs work completely independently and/or leads a crew of other seasonal workers.
  • Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion throughout the workday with close daily contact with unpleasant materials and for working outdoors under occasionally adverse weather conditions.
  • May operate light duty vehicles, trucks, tractors, riding and push mowers, grass trimmers, chain saws, rakes, shovels, sprayers, blowers, and other hand tools.
  • Cut grass with mowers and grass trimmers.
  • Operates a variety of hand tools and power equipment.
  • Performs semi-skilled painting work.
  • Performs general maintenance in aquatic facilities.
  • Monitors, handles, and installs chemicals for swimming pools under the direct supervision of the facility Certified Pool Operator.
  • Performs light repairs to swimming pool structures, fences, and gates.
  • Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, and other debris.
  • Cleans, maintains, and services equipment and tools.
  • Assists in the adjustment, repair, replacement, and installation of irrigation equipment.
  • Performs athletic field preparation and maintenance.
  • Picks up trash in the parks areas and disposes of it properly.
  • Cleans restrooms and picnic pavilions.
  • Maintains and performs light repair work on equipment, pools, buildings, and grounds operated by the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Moves and sets up for park functions including moving picnic tables, bleachers, and chairs for concerts and special events.
  • Cuts down and removes limbs, branches, and trees that have been damaged by adverse weather conditions and performs preventive tree maintenance under the supervision of the Program Coordinator - Forestry.
  • May be required to safely operates a motor vehicle for the purpose of driving to work locations and performing the essential functions of the position.

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assists with the general maintenance of all City parks and facilities.
  • Occasionally performs emergency duties after normal work hours.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade.
Physical Requirements:
 
  • Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls equipment, and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds, frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequently stands and walks for prolonged periods of time to observe for safety hazards and perform daily functions.
  • Uses manual dexterity to manipulate supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Uses visual acuity to read operating manuals and instructions; may safely operate a vehicle and equipment; identify hazards; and perform daily functions.
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movements including sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, twisting, walking, and balancing.
  • Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies and organizations.
  • Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use common hand tools such as drills, loppers, shovels, rakes, etc.
  • Ability to operate power equipment such as string trimmers, hedge trimmer, edgers, blowers, etc.
  • Some knowledge and/or the ability to learn about occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds and to repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing more than one hundred (100) pounds with assistance.
  • Knowledge of practices used in the operation of equipment and the ability to carry them out.
  • Must have the ability to work with unpleasant waste, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Literacy in English with the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules.
  • Ability to pick up garbage, clean, mop, and sanitize all parks and restroom facilities, and generally police all pools, parks, recreational areas, and facilities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and perform occasional overtime with some weekend and holiday work required.
  • Ability to report for work on time and perform the duties of the job for an entire workday.
  • Ability to maintain accurate time sheets and submit them to a designated supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Ability to follow City policies and regulations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug screen.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 
Position may require occasional overtime with some weekend and holiday work required. Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion throughout the workday with close daily contact with unpleasant materials and working outdoors under occasionally adverse weather conditions. All City facilities and vehicles are tobacco-free.
 
 Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information.
