I. TITLE: Laborer – Street Department

II. PAY CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

III. REPORTS TO: Street Department Superintendent, Lead Man

IV. NATURE OF WORK:

The position of Laborer has a union designation. Compensation for this position is derived from the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position shall be filled by the Commissioner and Superintendent of the Department with the consent of the City Council. The normal work hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Should weather, special projects, or other unforeseen events occur, it may be necessary to work overtime, weekends, or holidays. This position receives job assignments from the Lead Man or Superintendent in accordance with projects currently in progress.

V. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Arrive for each shift on time and appropriately dressed for safe operations.

· Acknowledge and understand that safety is of the utmost importance while performing duties and that items such as Machine Guards and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are mandatory, not optional.

· Effectively and respectfully communicate with Lead Man and/or Superintendent for job assignments and tasks needing performed before beginning the workday.

· Professionally and respectfully communicate with the public and employees of the city.

· Operate department equipment and machinery, including but not limited to backhoes, mowers, dump trucks and trimmers as instructed and treat said equipment and machinery with respect and perform proper maintenance as needed.

· Cutting of ditches for rainwater drainage.

· Installation of tile for culverts under driveways.

· Pouring concrete and/or patching blacktop for the improvement of city streets.

· Cutting, clearing, grading, and disposing of brush or other debris as instructed.

· Mowing of city owned property and/or right of ways as instructed.

· Perform flagging duties for street construction and employee safety as assigned.

· Remove snow and ice when necessary and as instructed.

· Perform pickup of yard waste during Spring and Fall.

· All other duties as assigned.

VII. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

· High School Degree or equivalent required.

· Acquire and retain any required licensing as mandated by any federal, state, or local agency.

· Possess a valid driver’s license. If employee does not currently have a CDL license, one must be acquired and retained for the operation of city trucks.

· Possess experience in the operation of heavy equipment and other machinery.

· Be physically able to lift 50 pounds and to work on one’s feet for long periods of time.

· Be able to work in inclement weather, including extreme heat or cold.

· Be available should the need arise to work overtime or on weekends and holidays.

· Possess the ability to read and write legibly and comprehend instructions.

· Must be able to complete all pre-employment/post-employment testing including but not limited to drug screening, physical exam, and background check successfully.
