City of Lewiston is Hiring an Accounting Assistant Near Lewiston, ID

Under the direction of the Finance Director, perform a variety of complex accounting duties involved in the functions of the Finance office, which may include but not be limited to reconciliation of daily bank deposits and monthly bank statements; activities related to receivables; activities related to payable and payroll processing; and maintain department financial records.

Perform a variety of complex accounting duties in support of the Finance office that may include but are not limited to the following:

Perform payable related tasks including but not limited to invoice entry, proofing, filing, updating vendor records, respond to vendors and employees regarding payments, and other duties as assigned.

Perform reconciliations of the daily bank deposits, matching deposits and credit card transactions with bank activity. Reconcile daily deposits to the ledger. Prepare transfer checks and monitor activity in bank accounts on a daily basis. Prepare monthly bank reconciliations of City bank accounts and investments.

Perform ledger account reconciliations and prepare and enter journal entries.

Perform other accounting functions and report preparations as assigned and required to assure smooth, timely and efficient operations for the division. 

Assist the Accounting Lead with green sheet (travel) related tasks including but not limited to reviewing authorized expenses to travel policy, adjusting expenses as needed, communicating with departments regarding travel expenses, preparing per diem checks, and other duties as assigned.

Assist other division members as necessary to assure timely and efficient operations and compliance with established time lines. 

Maintain confidentiality of information and records.

Other duties as assigned.

An equivalent combination to: graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in business, bookkeeping and accounting and three (3) years of increasingly responsible accounting clerical experience; experience with Microsoft Excel to analyze data and prepare reports; valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record; credit history review.

KNOWLEDGE OF: 
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment, record-keeping techniques, payable policies and practices, bank account reconciliation, accounting principles and practices, and applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures. 

Oral and written communication skills, bookkeeping techniques: correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary, interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy, telephone techniques and etiquette, data entry, operation of a PC and various office equipment; competent skills in Microsoft Word, Excel.

ABILITY TO:

Plan and organize work, understand and communicate oral and written instructions, establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, read, interpret and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to payroll-related issues, maintain records and prepare reports; exercise sound judgment; work independently with minimal direction; meet schedules and time lines with many interruptions; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; meet schedules and time lines with many interruptions; work confidentially with discretion.

Office environment: subject to considerable distraction and noise from interruptions and office activities. Physical activities include sitting and operating a keyboard to enter data into a computer terminal, calculator, typewriter, postage machine or other office equipment for extended, non-continuous periods of time. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, bending at the waist, moderate lifting up to 25 pounds, and hearing and speaking to exchange information.
