GENERAL INFORMATION:
Division: Solid Waste Facility
Barg. Unit: AFSCME Public Works
Status: Full Time, Day shift (40 hrs/week)
Grade: 4 [starting at $21.43/hour]
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent, plus three (3) years experience in the field of solid waste disposal and/or transfer station operation preferred, but not required. A valid State of Maine Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required (Class A preferred), with the ability to operate trucks and other equipment. Applicants should have knowledge of common tools, materials and practices used in solid waste management.
WORK ACTIVITIES: Operate light equipment and trucks to complete a variety of disposal tasks including, but not limited to transporting trash, ashes, recyclables, and cover material waste to off-site transfer/disposal facilities. Communicate clearly, courteously and tactfully with team members and members of the public. Answer telephone and respond to public inquiries regarding waste collection and disposal issues. Maintain general cleanliness throughout facility, including litter pick up. Perform light repairs and preventative maintenance on solid waste equipment. Work independently in the Facility’s Scale House, process payments and operate the Scale Management system. Candidates must be able to lift and palletize waste objects: frequently lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving up to 80 pounds. Knowledge and understanding of safety and solid waste regulations to assist the public and perform waste handling operations. Must be available for overtime, emergencies, and/or snow removal operations. Performs other duties as assigned.
