Job Title: Advanced Equipment Operator - Streets

Department: Public Works, Street Division

Reports to: Street Supervisor/Street Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Grade: 21

Wage: 2023 $19.25 - $26.04 / hr

2024 $22.281 - $30.145 / hr

General Statement of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor and general supervision of the Street Manager, is responsible for performing manual and semi-skilled to skilled tasks to include street repair and maintenance, mosquito and/or weed control, operation of light and heavy equipment related to street maintenance and snow removal work of moderate difficulty with a heavy emphasis on grader operation by performing the following duties.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintain municipal streets and rights-of-way in safe condition. Perform various duties in regards to repairs, maintenance and equipment operation.
  2. Operate and perform minor repairs to a variety of heavy equipment including but not limited to - trucks, payloaders, motor graders all used in the repair of City streets.
  3. Drive truck to haul equipment, crew, snow, gravel, and various other materials to work site. 
  4. Operate and maintain medium to heavy duty capacity dump trucks, tractors, trailers, and trucks with specialized equipment to include sand spreader, hot oil distributor, patching machine, crack sealing machine, vibratory rollers, steel face or pneumatic. 
  5. Operate snowplows and other snow removal heavy equipment.
  6. Operate equipment of small to medium capacity such as front-end loader, backhoe, and trucks in assisting in performing Municipal road repair and patchwork. Operate steamer to open frozen storm sewers, catch basins and culverts.
  7. Repair City streets and bridges to include loading and unloading materials, crack filling, and picking up litter as needed. May operate City Street Sweeper as requested.
  8. Assist other City departments as directed and/or deemed necessary.
  9. Responsible for the coordination and application of pesticides and herbicides process for control of weeds and pests, as directed and/or if appropriate to specific assigned position.
  10. Coordinate with Supervisor for ordering of chemicals and supplies for mosquito and weed abatement program; maintain records on types and quantities of chemical used and areas treated; and maintain MSDS binder for all chemicals used, as directed and/or if appropriate to specific assigned position. 
  11. Attend training, seminars, and workshops as deemed necessary.
  12. Perform work in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
  13. Perform other such duties and functions as assigned and/or deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience 

  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  2. Three (3) years experience in street maintenance and operation of related equipment.
  3. Experience in road repair and construction preferred.
  4. Ability to maintain courteous and positive relationships with public, city employees, construction crews and personnel from other agencies.
  5. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and be available after hours, weekends, and/or holidays as deemed necessary by Street Superintendent and in emergency situations.
  6. Position requires employee to be on-call and work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays as requested.

Certificates, Tests and Examination

  1. Successful competition in written tests and/or oral interviews.
  2. Possession of a valid South Dakota Commercial Drivers License with acceptable driving record.
  3. Possession or ability to obtain Mosquito Abatement/Pesticide Applicators License if assigned to mosquito abatement/noxious weed control.
  4. Other such examination as deemed necessary by the City.
