ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1965, the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC) aims to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American, immigrant, and low-income communities. Today, CPC is the nation's largest Asian American social services agency and offers more than 50 programs at over 35 sites throughout New York City, including early childhood education, school-age care, youth services, workforce development, community services, and senior services. CPC strives to be the premier social service and leadership development organization. In 2017, CPC launched Advancing Our CommUNITY, its organization-wide strategy to expand services to address persistent needs and emerging trends and to improve leadership skills among staff and community members. In 2022, our core programs and emergency services reached 200,000 people living in all five boroughs and all 51 city council districts. In the summer of 2022, CPC was recognized as the number one Chinese American organization in New York City to recommend to a Chinese immigrant looking for in-language and culturally competent resources according to a recent survey. PROGRAM SUMMARY

The mission of CPC Early Childhood Center is to foster a lifelong love of learning in each of our students. Our staff fosters positive learning experiences through love, respect, quality education and professionalism. Early Childhood Centers serves approximately 300 students from ages 1-5 in multiple locations throughout the city. The goal of the program is to support students in all learning areas including intellectual, academic, physical, social, and emotional growth.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Education Director, the full-time Cook is primarily responsible for preparing and serving all food in the center and for maintaining the kitchen in a sanitary and efficient condition. Additionally, the cook is responsible for the supervision and training of other staff assigned to kitchen or food service responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follows individual work schedule provided by the Director to indicate specific responsibilities and the time scheduled for them
  • Cooperates in total staff effort designed to improve center's service
  • Food:
    • Prepare, cook and serve food according to recommended practices
    • Follow weekly menu made out in consultation with the Director. Confer with Director when menu changes are indicated, i.e., necessary substitution or the use of left-overs.
    • Apportion food for children's groups according to need
    • Make local food purchases when necessary 
  • Housekeeping:
    • Wash dishes and utensils according to sanitary practices
    • Keep kitchen and storeroom in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition, e.g., range, sink, refrigerator, cupboards
    • Keep kitchen equipment and utensils in good condition
    • Place kitchen garbage in designated covered receptacle
    • In the absence of a helper, the cook shall wash dish towels and truck covers
  • Inventory and Supplies:
    • Keep simple inventory of food and household supplies on hand as needed
    • Inform Director of needed food supplies, repairs, and replacement of kitchen equipment and utensils
    • Be responsible for storing or supervising the storage of all food and household supplies
  • Other related duties, as assigned, consistent with the above


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Previous related experience in food preparation (preferable in large quantities), dishwashing and housekeeping

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to read and write to follow written menus, recipes and work schedules.
  • Ability to keep simple inventory of supplies on hand and needed
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with other staff, children, parents and visitors to the center
  • Ability to maintain sanitary work and personal habits 
  • Must be in good health and be willing to undergo annual physical examinations and submit required medical documentation

Hiring for this position is subject to:

  • Review of resume completeness including education, experience, and skills
  • Verification of three (3) references
  • Completion of employment application
  • Completion of interview
  • Fingerprint Clearance from the Department of Investigation
  • Statewide Central Register Clearance
  • Child Abuse and Maltreatment Certification (online training)
  • Additional mandated trainings as required by Department of Health
  • Trainings can be done after hiring (within 2 weeks of hire)
  • Recent physical (within one year), including immunization record

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

  • $16.00 - $16.00 per hour; 37.5 hours per week
  • CPC offers a comprehensive union benefits package to full-time staff
