Chartis Group is Hiring a Payroll Specialist Near Chicago, IL

The Chartis Group is seeking an experienced, organized Payroll Specialist to join our Finance team in Chicago. The Payroll Specialist will be an integral part of all payroll related activities of a growing, fast-paced professional services firm. The successful candidate will bring knowledge and experience in payroll processing and project support. Chartis is consistently recognized as a best places to work. Responsibilities

  • Assists in processing on time, accurate payroll.
  • Works with the payroll manager to maintain payroll information by accurate collection, calculation, and entering of data.
  • Updates payroll records at the payroll manager’s direction reviewing changes in exemptions, insurance coverage, savings deductions, fringe benefit reporting, and other employee profile information for new hires, terminations, and department transfers.
  • Validates calculation of multi-state wages and non-exempt wages and ensures appropriately reported and taxed at federal, state and local level.
  • Pays employees by directing the production and issuance of paychecks or electronic transfers to bank accounts.
  • Prepares reports by compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, nontaxable wages and other codes as necessary.
  • Works with the payroll manager to ensure payroll accounts balance by resolving payroll discrepancies; posts the payroll journal entries to the general ledger.
  • As part of the payroll team, you will be a contact for payroll related questions and requests.
  • Maintains employee confidence and protects payroll operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Partners effectively with other departments across the firm (e.g., Human Resources) on payroll related matters as needed. 
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed with accuracy and timeliness.

Qualifications & Desired Skills

  • Experience with ADP WorkForce Now preferred
  • Experience with multi-state wage reporting preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years of previous operational payroll experience
  • Excellent data entry management and reporting skills
  • Understanding of federal, state and local compensation and wage structure
  • Experience with benefits administration; a partner to the People team in applying benefits administration
  • General knowledge of employment law, IRS and state tax code requirements as they related to wages, income and deductions
  • Follow standards and processes with strong internal controls
  • Intermediate level Excel skills
  • Experience with Financial Force and Tableau, a plus
