Catholic Community Services is Hiring an Ukrainian Legal Assistant Near Salt Lake, UT

Position Title: Ukrainian Legal Assistant

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Full or part-time status: Full-time or Part-time

Department: Migration and Refugee Services

Reports to: Immigration Program Manager

Hiring Range: $18.00-$23.00/hr DOE

Primary Function of Position

As a Ukrainian Legal Assistant, you'll collaborate closely with our legal staff to file immigration cases on behalf of Ukrainian parolees. Your role includes providing interpretation and document translation services in both Russian and Ukrainian. All of this will be done under the guidance and supervision of our experienced legal team.

Major Position Responsibilities

  1. Commitment to Mission: Uphold the mission of Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) and the immigration and refugee resettlement programs.
  2. Clerical Duties: Handle various clerical tasks, including maintaining client files (both digital and physical), scheduling appointments, communicating with clients, and relaying messages for legal staff via email and phone.
  3. Paralegal Support: Perform paralegal duties under legal staff supervision. This involves meeting with clients directly, collecting necessary documents and client information for legal forms, gathering client responses to questionnaires, and handling application mailings.
  4. Eligibility Communication: Clearly communicate with clients and community partners regarding eligibility for CCS Immigration Program Services.
  5. Case Documentation: Thoroughly document all case work in the client's file or the electronic filing system.
  6. Interpretation and Translation: Provide interpretation and translation services as needed.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  1. This role is in a professional office environment, utilizing standard office equipment, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. 
  2. Driving is a required part of this position.

Physical Demands

  1. While primarily a sedentary role, some filing tasks are involved. This entails lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasionally bending or standing as needed.

Education, Training, and Experience

  1. Educational Requirements: a bachelor's degree, Paralegal Certification, or equivalent experience. It does not need to be a degree from the U.S.
  2. Bilingual Proficiency: Proficient in both Ukrainian and English. Russian would also meet this qualification, but Ukrainian is preferred.
  3. Microsoft Office 365 Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  4. Keyboarding and Data Entry Skills: Competence in keyboarding and accurate data entry.
  5. Office Management Knowledge: Understanding of office management systems and procedures.
  6. Clerical Experience: Preferred experience in administrative and clerical procedures.

Background Screening Requirement

  1. Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.

Licenses, certifications, and credentials 

  1. A current Utah driver's license and provide proof of auto insurance meeting minimum policy liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident. Additionally, be 21 years of age or older, maintain a clean driving record, and have the capacity to fulfill CCS vehicle safety standards.

Position status and expected schedule

  1. The general work schedule can be part-time or full-time with the work hours falling between Monday and Friday from 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
