The Regional Operations Manager is responsible for all management aspects across multiple mobile units/mini shops in a specific geographic area which encompasses Quality, Safety, Production, Maintenance, Training, Sales and Special Projects. The main responsibility of these field units is the performance of various repairs on tank cars assigned to area owners/lessors in an expeditious manner that will eliminate loss of revenues due to downtime associated with shopping of cars. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with customers and promoting the use and development of mobile units/mini shops to generate revenues for the Company.
Job Summary:
The Manager, Regional Operations - Mobile Services is responsible for all management aspects across multiple mobile operations in a specific geographic area which encompasses Quality, Safety, Production, Maintenance, Training, Sales, and Special Projects. The main responsibility of these field units is the performance of various repairs on tank cars assigned to area owners/lessors in an expeditious manner that will eliminate loss of revenues due to downtime associated with shopping of cars. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with customers and promoting the use and development of mobile operations to generate revenues for the Company.
Job Description:
This position oversees the management of field units in a specific geographic area which includes the following locations in the Gulf region (Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida). Each unit has a supervisor who heads up day-to-day operations with the incumbent overseeing all operations in their region.
The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of managing the mobile operations assigned to him/her, including initial start-up activities. The incumbent investigates potential sites, works with company representatives to start up site, arranges for equipment, materials and workforce required to open an operation of this type, and trains a supervisor in the performance of day-to-day functions that will ensure an efficient operation. He/she then monitors the operations to ensure standards are being adhered to and objectives are being met. To solicit business and effectively sell UTC services, the incumbent must possess a strong working knowledge of UTC's equipment and repair capabilities and their application by industry and market. The incumbent must have a good knowledge of our repair process and technical advantages and be able to compare our strengths and weaknesses with those of his/her competition.
He/she must be capable of providing in-depth explanations of UTC's policies, including pricing and repair capabilities, and be able to handle sensitive sales situations with minimum impact on businesses. The incumbent will make joint sales calls to customers with the appropriate Sales Representative or Regional Sales Manager to promote the Company's repair capabilities and services.
Primary responsibilities & Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversees the overall management of mobile operations assigned to him/her to always ensure efficient operations and customer satisfaction.
  • Promotes and sells new mobile operations to our present and prospective customers. Solicits and negotiates new location sites to promote company expansion that will generate increased company revenues.
  • Recruits new supervisors and trains employees in accordance with the company's safety, industrial hygiene and environmental policies and programs, and enforces compliance with published work rules. Responsible for initial training of all employees and ensuring on-going skill training programs exist to inform and educate all staff.
  • Assists location supervisor(s) with production and material scheduling to maximize operational efficiencies and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Identifies potential maintenance problems and eliminates them by preventative maintenance. Assure adequate repair parts inventory to minimize maintenance related downtime. Provide instruction to front line supervisors in proper operational methods required to minimize downtime to equipment failure.
  • Selects, develops, demonstrates leadership, and empowers subordinates to establish a productive work environment that encourages a team approach for continuous improvement to achieve the company's vision.
  • Collect and analyze process data to initiate, develop and recommend business practices and procedures that focus on enhanced safety, increased productivity, and reduced cost.
  • Participate in cross-regional working groups to improve business processes by studying current practices and proposing modifications, taking an end-to-end perspective with a focus on improved service, operational excellence, and increased customer satisfaction.
  • Measures and maintains quantifiable targets to ensure we are making data-driven decisions.
  • Exemplify the desired culture and philosophies of the organization.
  • Work effectively as a team member with other members of Management and the HR Staff.
  • Participates in and actively supports quality projects, activities, and responsible care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.

  • Be willing and able to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs, and respirators.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic selling skills and related customer relations.
  • Ability to operate a computer to access and maintain financial, training, and operational information through the appropriate software.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Communicate, through written and verbal means, and give instructions/information in a clear and understandable manner to subordinates/customers.
  • Be able to travel outside of the normal place of work via automobile, train, and commercial airline.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 50% required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs
Education & Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of related work experience in a lean manufacturing/repair environment with supervisory leadership skills.
  • Railcar repair, Railroad industry, equipment leasing, transportation or manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience leading or supporting multiple sites is beneficial.
