Total Fiber Recovery of Chesapeake (TFRC) is a joint venture between Oregon-based Total Fiber Recovery, a subsidiary of Bulk Handling Systems, and the Swedish company CellMark Inc. This new facility will annually produce over 200,000 tons of recycled pulp from mixed paper (MP) and cardboard (OCC). The facility is under construction with operations start expected in the 3rd quarter of 2023, with a total staff of 50 in place by 1st quarter of 2024.
As a result of the new launch, TFRC is looking for a Controller for the facilitylocated in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The Controller manages the administrative functions for production, cost analysis, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, monthly financial statements, month end closing, inventory management and annual budgeting. This position also manages additional administrative functions such as providing meaningful financial data for analysis, identifying opportunities, and recommending solutions to business problems.
If you have these qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities…
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or business management
- Five (5) plus years' experience as a plant controller or cost manager, with an emphasis on cost accounting, reporting and variance analysis
- Demonstrate intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
- Demonstrated experience working with ERP systems, Infor products preferred
- Ability to communicate and present financial concepts to various audiences in person and via audio and video formats
- Demonstrated leadership experience preferred
- Must possess experience implementing best practices and strategic initiatives

- Perform all day-to-day general accounting functions for TFRC, ensuring adherence to GAAP
- Resolve questions of GAAP and internal controls with corporate financial management
- Analyze internal controls to ensure assets are adequately safeguarded and results are accurately reported
- Prepare monthly reports of results, monthly forecasts, annual operating plan, and strategic planning. Analyze and accurately report current month's financial results to the plant, sales, and corporate management and in accordance with corporate format and time requirements
- Manage internal controls at the plant for operations, sales, and finance. Update the design and execution of internal controls to cope with growth and changing accounting environment
- Submit all financial transactions, transmissions, and reporting on a timely and accurate basis. Reconcile all inter-company accounts monthly
- Ensure accuracy of the physical inventory and reported results. Investigates and explains book to physical adjustments. Maintain a perpetual inventory for finished goods and reconciles this perpetual to processing and shipping daily. Analyze potential excess and obsolete inventory items monthly
- Perform periodic audits of inbound and outbound materials to ensure revenue/costs are accurate and accounted for properly
- Perform periodic walkthroughs of the plant with the General Manager to discuss processing and costing issues
- Document and understand ERP/MRP systems, hardware, and reporting conventions. Maintain daily dashboard of operating results
- Remain current with accounting standards and drafts accounting memos regarding impacts to the business, where applicable
- Review labor reporting and cost, consumables costs, processing overhead, rejections and inventory levels
- Conduct formal meetings with processing, finance, and sales management personnel to discuss all plant issues. Develop and publish a formal agenda and recap with actions to be taken
- Work closely with the operations team, providing meaningful insight and analysis of key drivers of performance
- Assist in the preparation of capital expenditure proposals
- Support the development of the annual budget including the plant Profit & Loss Statement (P&L) and Balance Sheet
- Drive the development and implementation of new policies and procedures. Monitor and ensure compliance of the policies and procedures
- Actively engage with internal customers, developing strong relationships with operations management to better understand and anticipate business needs
- Actively works with HR to build and maintain productive employee relationships
- Lead safety initiatives for administrative employees ensuring compliance with plant safety rules
