Compensation - $85,000 - $110,000

The Buffalo Urban League, a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment, equality, and social justice, is seeking a Controller. An affiliate of the National Urban League, The Buffalo Urban League collaborates at the national and local levels with community leaders, policymakers, and corporate partners to elevate the standards of living for African Americans and other historically underserved groups.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller, the successful candidate will be a team leader and demonstrate a passion for the Buffalo Urban League’s mission to help African Americans and others in underserved communities achieve their highest true social parity, economic self- reliance, power, and civil rights.

The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing all day-to-day accounting operations. This includes overseeing the monthly accounting close process, performing account analysis and reconciliations, preparing detailed financial statements and cash flow reports, overseeing the accounts payable, receivable, and payroll functions, and oversight of monthly expense reporting to contract agencies. Additionally, the Controller will also assist in the billing of funding organizations, maintain accounts/grants receivable documentation, and assist the Director of Finance as needed and respond to information requests by management and auditors.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

• Managing the Accounting staff, current staff include two non-exempt accountants and a Senior Accountant, who has responsibility for Payroll and Accounts Payable.
• Maintaining financial reports, records, and general ledger accounts.
• Preparing journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations and managing the monthly closing process, including financial statement preparation.
• Contributing to the development and review of annual operating budgets and performance projections.
• Preparing billing information for funding organizations and maintaining documentation for accounts/grants receivable.
• Performing monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including bank reconciliations.
• Meeting processing and reporting deadlines.
• Responding to information requests, reviewing financial statements, and assisting with audits.
• Ensuring compliance with GAAP.
• Other duties as assigned.

• A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
• A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience.
• A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.

• Solid leadership skills that include negotiation, problem solving, and delegation, as well as the ability to lead and motivate departmental staff.
• Written and verbal communication skills.
• Action orientation, analytical thinking, business acumen, decision making skills, follow through, and organization.
• Excellent Microsoft Office Suite skills (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of Fund EZ accounting software is desired, but not required.
