Job Title: Manager of FSQA

Location: Hoover, Alabama

Reports to: President

Basic Purpose

The Quality Assurance & Food Safety Manager is tasked with defining and promoting a strong quality culture across the entire organization. The Quality Assurance & Food Safety Manager is responsible for managing all QA functions, working with cross-functional leadership to deliver high quality products. The manager establishes and maintains a quality system to ensure the company’s facilities, equipment, personnel, methods, processes, and procedures conform to both internal guidelines and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, or similar science field from an accredited College or University
  • At least 10 years (15 years preferred) in the food industry (corporate and plant experience preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience in a food manufacturing plant
  • PCQI trained
  • HACCP trained
  • GMP trained
  • GFSI trained
  • Experience conducting GFSI benchmark audits required
  • Conduct IA and responsible for actively participating in all EA and/or inspections
  • Experience with FDA and USDA regulatory bodies
  • Knowledge of food microbiology and ISO/IEC 17025:2018
  • Knowledge of FDA, USDA regulations and guidelines
  • In-depth knowledge of FDA regulations, HACCP, SSOP, SOP, and cGMPs
  • Knowledge of Regulatory, Compliance & Documentation Affairs
  • Knowledgeable in Food Safety Plan, GMP, SPC, and Pest Control
  • Knowledgeable in CAPA, CCR, and B2B
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent Interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Update HACCP and food safety plans as requirements/rules and product lines change
  • Develop policies to define the company’s commitment to Quality & Food Safety
  • Support the business by providing technical assistance on Quality and Food Safety standards & guidelines
  • Ensure all products transition from R&D with the appropriate information regarding product safety
  • Communicate to the company any legislative changes
  • Participate in customer work groups as needed to maintain appropriate relationships
  • Review product specifications at an interval that assures compliance with all regulatory and customer requirements
  • Assure the execution and adherence of Bud’s Best Cookies quality and food safety programs, policies, and procedures through the management and oversight of local QA departments
  • Ensure effective coordination of investigations, root cause analysis, risk assessments and implementation of change control, and corrective and preventative actions to the adhered timelines while following up through various methods including trending to ensure all corrective and preventative actions were implemented effectively
  • Communicate quality information on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis through reports, meetings, and presentations, as required
  • Provide plant management and company leadership with an accurate view of the company performance in quality
  • Ability to work one-on-one with QA techs on the production floor to ensure product integrity

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Labeling – Nutritional and Ingredient Statements
  • Implement a strategy to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements for Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP, and FSMA
  • Work with USDA, FDA, and state inspectors; perform environmental and product testing samples as needed
  • Answer Non-Compliance Records (NRs)

Audit Programs:

  • Facilitate Food Safety Plan and HACCP & HARPC (FSMA), (FDA only) reanalysis or revalidation at a frequency specified by the respective regulatory agency
  • Maintain document control system for all quality and sanitation related policies and procedures
  • Create, revise, manage, and conduct training for food safety and quality programs in partnership with Human Resources
  • Maintain compliance to secondary and third-party program requirements (GFSI-SQF scheme, Kosher, Halal, Customers, etc.)
  • Oversee Internal Audit program
  • Establish and maintain a close working relationship that helps to develop and sustain the food safety and quality culture with the key operating departments: Manufacturing, Procurement, Sanitation, Warehouse, and Customer Service
  • Provide strategic and technical guidance to the senior leadership team

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents in English
  • Ability to write technical reports and formal correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply mathematical, statistical, and scientific principles used in the food industry

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety on instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or spreadsheet format

Work Environment:

  • Plant environment:
    • Temperature variations
    • Exposure to noise above 85 dB (hearing protection required)
