Boston Globe Media Partners is Hiring a Controller Near Boston, MA

Job Description:

We need a leader who thrives on building processes and driving change. The Controller will report to the VP of Finance and be responsible for providing day-to-day leadership for the company’s Accounting, Treasury, Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Tax activities. In addition, the Controller will be expected to work closely with the FP&A, Advertising Revenue Operations, Subscription Revenue Operations, and Single Copy Revenue Operations functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversight and accountability for all aspects of accounting: revenue accounting, general accounting, payroll, cash management and treasury, tax compliance, and the month-end close process.
  • Direct, coordinate, maintain, and control the company’s accounting and external reporting in accordance with US GAAP, as well as with corporate policies and procedures.
  • Oversee timely, accurate, and efficient accounting of monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Perform account reconciliation review and analyses to ensure accuracy of balances and timeliness of journal entries.
  • Assess, implement, and monitor all internal control practices including accuracy of the NetSuite accounting software and connections with related sub-ledger systems and collaboration with departments across the organization to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, such as those related to timekeeping, expense reimbursement, and corporate card usage.
  • Prepare, maintain, and report analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain financial records in accordance with US GAAP and compliance with internal controls.
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition of complex multi-element activities, including revenue models related to advertising and subscriptions.
  • Partner with FP&A to support preparation of timely, complete, and accurate information, metrics, and reporting analyses for management and ownership.
  • Provide leadership to team members through effective goalsetting, delegation, and communication.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business initiatives and provide financial insights.
  • Oversee the strengthening of financial operations and internal controls and their impact on reporting processes.
  • Standardize documentation for technical accounting topics and policies, including revenue recognition, expense and fixed assets capitalization, and grants/contributions.
  • Work with external tax advisor for annual and quarterly tax preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.

Qualifications: 

  • 8 to 10 years of progressive experience, including a minimum of 3 years of management experience.
  • Proven success shaping and maintaining the accounting operations and internal controls as a senior accounting position or as a Controller in a private company.
  • Solid knowledge of US GAAP and compliance with proven hands-on technical and operational accounting experience and financial expertise with public entities.
  • Proven leadership skills inspiring great results with positive attitudes in a fast-paced team environment, with the ability to influence, train, and mentor staff to achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrated commercially minded professional with strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Established self-starter with experience working in a hands-on environment who is able to prioritize workload and provide solutions that consider and incorporate complex structures, systems, and processes.
  • Experience identifying areas for improvement and implementing more effective and efficient processes and strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of payroll processing software and processes to help implementation of professional best practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a results-oriented, project-driven, real-time team environment, prioritize projects, and deliver quality results within tight time constraints.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experienced, confident presenter to all audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, managing several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of an extended, cross-functional team.
  • Experience managing large teams of accounting and finance professionals.
  • Experience in the media industry a strong plus.
  • BA/BS and CPA required.
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Experience with NetSuite and payroll software, such as ADP and UKG, preferred.
  • Big 4 Public Accounting experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in subscription and advertising business models preferred.
  • Experience with US and foreign tax compliance and regulations preferred.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment 

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
