    Founded in 2022, Elevate Charter Schools (ECS) is a growing nonprofit Charter Management Organization that is headquartered in Hamden, Connecticut. We offer comprehensive administrative services to our portfolio of schools so they can focus on the heart of the work: teaching and caring for kids. ECS operates two schools in New Haven: Booker T. Washington Academy Elementary and Middle School and is the approved charter management organization for the soon-to-open first International Baccalaureate charter school in Connecticut, Danbury Charter School.     Job Summary:


    The Director of Human Resources will plan, lead, direct develop and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of Elevate Charter School’s mission and human capital development strategy. Responsibilities include directing and managing human resources to support ECS’s short- and long-term strategic goals. The HR Director is supervised by the Chief Operating Officer (COO), works in partnership with the leadership team, and supervises human resources staff. The HR Director is a full-time, exempt position.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:


    • Interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
    • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
    • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
    • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with organization policy.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Conduct all New Hire Employee Orientations.
    • Collaborates with the Senior Director of School Culture and Talent Development to implement the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
    • Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs.
    • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
    • Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
    • Oversees compensation, performance appraisals, and staff training and development activities.
    • Advise and counsel management team on personnel and management issues.
    • Advise and counsel staff on personnel policies and procedures including compensation, recruitment, and performance.
    • Oversee employee-related insurance, as well as retirement and medical flex programs.
    • Celebrate staff anniversaries and look for opportunities to celebrate staff success.
    • Oversee the annual employee renewal process for ECS schools.
    • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.
    • Develops and implements departmental budget.
    • Facilitates professional development, training, and certification activities for HR staff and Supervisory staff.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    Required Skills/Abilities:

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
    • At least five years of human resource management experience required.
    • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
